Karen
This is the first time in years that I have logged back on to the TMS Forum too. Really want to know how your concert went after reading the thread of your messages. Quite reassuring in a perverse way to see your name and Tennis Tom's again after all these years because the reason I have logged on is exactly because TMS has reared its ugly head once more for me. Have been sooo much better but currently woke up with stiff, very painful neck. Now I know that does not make sense but it is very distracting none the less!! I know I'm obsessing about it and not ignoring it. I hate journalling too. Did it for ages a while back but admitted to myself it is like a bully taking me somewhere I do not want to go so no wonder TMS returns. My plan is to revisit this site, take comfort from repeatedly reading TMS advice and success and face a lttle journalling . I know there's loads of stress about for me currently and I have been stoically working hard, supporting others and been over busy. Wish me luck! I mention all this Karen because you and I know this TMS demands a battle which we just need to face up to and tackle. We'll both be better in the long run. Me I lack patience in this process and can worry (it's the fear and the memory of what went before), but you and I and others can succeed. Keep hold of the hope.

Catspine, Just saw your reply now, been so pre-occupied with many things wasn't online..I am typing this, btw..But, now..I am having MVP, skipped beats in my heart! Yikes this is insidious! Just found out a friend from high school died on Sunday. I had been trying to find her on Facebook a few months ago..So sad..What did u find in my post that was interesting? I have several ideas of the source of my TMS, but not sure which it really is..
Tom, So sorry sweetie for the delay..The gig went well..but, they set me up in front of a blender & I had to make jokes about it being my back up band..I have had better gigs, but it did increase the sales of my CD's in the store..so it was good! Didn't meet the man of my dreams yet..:) You are sooo right, now I'm having skipped beats in my heart and little chest pains (intermittant!)..Was eating really good recently and then screwed up royally after a date w/ my ex boyfriend that went kind of sour after he drank too much! Yikes! How ru?
Hey Lizzie, Good to hear from you! So sorry you are suffering too! Yes, I need to journal..Part of my TMS is in my wrists..I am typing this, but not without pain..We will succeed..There's alot of wonderful support on this board!
Hugs to all, Karen |

Yikes, 2 years later and the old gang's still here! Hi Karen. Good to see you're still making music and art!! Not easy to make a living as an artist so give yourself kudos for that...
I'm currently dealing with a relapse, so it's good to be back among friends..

Hi Karen....Better now that a pretty and talented woman's called me sweetie...I guess I'm softening up in my old age.
I'm ok. A laundry list of TMS symptoms tho.... Big relapse I guess. I've also taken up the piano, an old love of mine and my right hand is in terrible shape. Trouble is, as with the running stuff, there's no way to know for sure. The pain is appropriate so nothing suspicious there.
What a drag this stuff can be... |

Hiya Art, Thanks for the compliment, Art..That's great that you're taking up piano! Imagine this, I teach piano without playing it these days due to RSI! Thank God I only have beginning students! I am typing this, so that's a start..I have big time fears of aging too, especially as a singer..as an artist it doesn't matter how old or fat I am, but as a vocalist, it does..I'm listening to the Sarno radio interview from your post, thanx for that! Hang in there dear friend..This too shall pass..We both go thru phases but always come thru it somehow..This forum definitely helps! Hugs, K |

I've had a few qualified piano teachers check out my technique to see if I'm doing something to cause injury, but aside from a few minor postural issues nothing stood out. I play strictly classical these days (all chopin all the time basically), but I sure wish I could play more.Too bad you don't live close-by. I'm looking for a new teacher.
I remember the aging issues. Best way to fight that is to work-out. It's amazing how one can almost always tell if someone's worked out their whole lives.Beyond that of course, not much we can do. Please don't ever get surgery! It's almost always a bad idea in my opinion.
You're a beautiful woman. Just trust that and try not to look in the mirror so much. Lest you think I'm just spouting off, guys can often have the same problem. I know I do. I miss going into some store and getting a nice smile from the pretty young gal behind the cash register. Now they just take my money as if it were something I've just sneezed into :>)

I hear ya, Art..:) Do you stretch out your wrists b4 playing..Honestly, the only way I am typing now is by stretching first..And I know that's a TMS boo boo for sure..I have unconscious stuff going on, for sure..and i know that's behind my pain..It moves all over the place..I deal w/ knee pain too..Cannot stand in one spot for more then a minute or so without pain..but I blame that on the weight i need to lose..surely it's just TMS! Chopin, great choice! |

Hi Karen. Occupied =Very good! Preoccupied = Not so good ! If you’re busy enough with the first one there isn’t much time left for the second one so this problem takes care of itself easily. Simultaneously imagine what will happen if you spend your time only creating and mastering…while living for the art. You’re the expert so nobody can do that for you. I’m sorry I will have to go over the posts to find what I wanted to tell you then as the inspiration of the moment vanished but I trust it will come back and if not then it just wasn’t meant to be. When a relapse occurs or persists with new symptoms that set off a set of anxiety which of course can be a symptom equivalent itself I try to identify them by figuring out if the autonomic nervous system is involved in the process and how because this is easily available information and if it does the result is that the new symptom likely completes the existing list of tms equivalent symptoms in place with one more instead of sending you into panic mode imagining all sort of things that may or may not happen or be causing troubles. You can then shrug it off for what it is have a hot tea to celebrate and go on with your occupation. The idea here is that since it is hard to figure out the conflict of emotion(s) causing the syndrome to begin with it is much easier to check if they potentially have the same origin anatomically when the symptoms start and then try the TMS approach to get rid of them .(I must say it so make sure you check with your MD first to eliminate a medical condition for the symptoms of course ) I noticed for myself that this technique results in quickly turning new symptoms off when they appear out of the blue but can sometimes displace the need for them as quickly and so on. I just stay aware of that there was nothing wrong with this or that part of my body a few days or hours ago and that it makes no sense at all to have pain in that new location except if it is generated in the autonomic system as a TMS equivalent (in particular when it affects the function you do not have conscious control over like posture etc. However as it doesn’t address the emotions that may be responsible for the syndrome directly and as it only acknowledges the mechanism of it which may work for some and not for others but it can be a way to make more time to do what must be done if more is required. On Page 46/47 of the Mind Body Prescription by Dr Sarno ( Have you read it again recently?) there is a more detailed paragraph with a small diagram that inspired me to make it work for myself as I wrote above when I needed it. Maybe you’ll find something of your interest in there. PS: I'm wondering if weight gain function in the same way allergies do according to Dr S. maybe you want to check this out while you're in there too . |

Hi CS, Thanks so much for the thought out response..It's my own fault that you can't recal the insight..I go from one extreme to the other on here..either posting a lot or not at all..It's like when I have a little bit of relief I don't even want to think about how TMS will surely rear it's ugly head again soon..I will re-read the book, good idea..I also want to get the new one he has out, i am sure it's fantastic. The symptom imperative is something I have dealt w/ for years..it moves around to all the areas that were once injured for real at one time..and..re. my knee, I can blame it on the extra weight I gained due to peri-menopausal depression eating! That's a mouthful in itself, no pun intended. I am wondering what role hormones play in all this because during this time in a womans life one can have an increase in weight, pain, anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory loss..all the things I am dealing with and don't talk a lot about on here..I was going to write you, by the way, a personal email thanking you and asking if you wanted to be email or Facebook pals..wanted to ask TT & Art as well.. Lots of love, Karen |

You're an artist Karen and the contrary would have surprised me as to your way of posting here. I did not know D'r Sarno had written an other book, thank you.
The effect of the hormones at play in this context can be a difficult thing to go through but it will come to do its thing and go when all done , it is just the nature of the hormones changes to do that . Try not to think of it as something personal... I read that in some different cultures or countries the perceived annoying effects it has over the body are really considered minor compared to how women relate to it in the western world. Maybe it is tightly linked to emotional perception if the same problem can end up having quite different results on physiologically similar beings but I'm not born female and my understanding is limited on this matter so this is about all I could say about it. Genetics on the other hand may also have a significant impact on the way we age physically dependently on our origins and we can easily find similarities with ancestors long gone already while looking at old family pictures or at people from the same geographic background. As an example of that my spouse's ancestors from Mongolia left her with some genetic abilities to fight off some minor heath issues I'll never come close to...it simply looks like her genes are tougher than mine... This is why on the long run 'multicultural' diversity is so vital to human evolution.
Thank you for your personal intention, I appreciate it but I'm sorry I do not do email or Facebook or any social networking at this time this forum being the exception as a small contribution to sharing experience.
PS: What's the name of the new book please?
