I was just reading a member's profile on the wiki and she wrote:

I anticipate problems all the time, every day and I'm not "disappointed." I ruminate on what could happen or go wrong. And when I expect chest pain or shortness of breath or weird sensations, I tend to get them (quite quickly sometimes!).
I had a funny clenchy sensation in my throat as I was writing that which I think is indicative of something.
So if I'm sitting here imagining the worst, then I start feeling the symptoms because my body is responding to what I'm thinking about. It is a simple concept but pretty amazing, too.
Today I have an appointment to see my cardio doc, partly to talk about the Crestor he wants me on and partly to talk about my symptoms but I find that this morning I've been feeling worse than I have all week. I am getting short of breath and weird new sensations like I can't breathe and all that stuff. I can't stop thinking about seeing him, and I'm afraid of what he will tell me. I took a xanax but the sensations are kinda new, I'm feeling them in a different way. I guess that's the anxiety and TMS showing itself. dread going to a doc, ruminate on it and fear it and you just manifest breathing symptoms and aches and pains. I also feel like slept like a pretzel and ache all over my shoulders and neck and back.
I really do think that the "new" weird breathing sensations are because I don't want to see the doc. I REALLY DON'T. But I am compelled to and right now I can not stop myself from needing something from him. WHat, I don't know. He is a cardiologist, there's only so much he can do or offer. I need a proper therapist.
Do you find that when you have to face something you don't want to do, you get more or new symptoms? or when you start to feel better a few days go by and then something comes back or something new starts? If I get a few days in "between symptoms" I feel really lucky. |

Think about this statement for a minute in the context of what TMS means. If you don't get what I'm talking about, I really suggest you read and re-read and re-read The Mindbody Connection until you do. Because either the concepts have not yet sunk in, or you refuse to accept them.
It's almost as if part of you does "get it" but cannot escape the clutches of the other part of you that is laced with anxiety and obsessive behavior and just can't let that go.
You continually focus on the symptoms and treating them. As long as you do this, you are not treating the TMS. Perhaps you have to go down this road fully before you finally give in and accept the symptoms as TMS, and follow Dr. Sarno's treatment advice. |

I am going to pick his book up from the library in a few mins, I have it on hold there. I think I reserved both of the books -- not the back pain one since I don't really have a lot of lower back pain. Should I get that one as well or just the other two?
I just got really upset about a situation at work and then felt so out of breath and like a weird tension or tightness in my lower throat upper chest. I guess I should put 2 and 2 together and realize that my co worker's behavior was upsetting me and I was getting frenzied but again like you said I am obsessing about it being my heart and no other explanation will take care of it til I let the heart idea go. |

Jerica, the back pain book is not just about back pain, it applies to all pain. I read and have all of his books and read them in the order in which they were written.
When you talk about the tightness after a situation at work, well, that always happens to me. I remember a few years ago I was at a friend's house feeling just fine when I checked my phone messages at home. I had a client I could not stand and just hearing her voice set up such immediate lower jaw pain that I asked my friend for an ice pack. I also get an immediate brain to gut reaction when I get anxiety (bathroom real quick). Yup, we all know that emotions bring on an immediate pain. I am wondering why you are thinking of taking Crestor. Excuse me for not remembering, but have you actually had a diagnosis of heart or artery problems? |

I would recommend The Mindbody Connection. I think Healing Back Pain is a bit more down to earth. The fact that you don't have back pain is inconsequential. The actual physical symptoms are not significant.
After you read the book you will understand what to do in situations such as the one you have just encountered with a co-worker. Something about the exchange touched a nerve inside you and set off the symptoms. You need to accept the symptoms stem from psychological issues and not physical. |

Dave, you said you would recommend The Mindbody Connection but then said Healing Back pain is more down to Earth so I'm not sure which you think is better. I have all of them but would like to know your opinion, if someone was to just choose one. |
