Hello everyone!

I am writing what I guess is a long overdue TMS story. I discovered Dr. Sarno about 9 years ago after delivering my second child. I developed sciatica and by chance found Mind Over Back Pain. I eventually saw Dr. Segall in Maryland and within about 7 months, I was free of any symptoms. Over the next six year, I would be painfree for about 10 months out of every year, although the two months would be very minor issues. These issues included neck and arm pain, ankle pain, foot pain and buttock pain. All in all, I did pretty well. During this time, I moved to New York and in 2008, I changed jobs. Right after I made the decision to change jobs, I started having sciatica again. Eight months later, still having the sciatica, I found out my husband had a girl friend and I started into my divorce. The sciatica finally disappeared after about another eight months. I point out the length of time because even with the knowledge and all of the tools, it took a long time but it did eventually go away. I saw Dr. Sarno during that time and he suggested I see a psychologist which did help. I was pain free for over a year and then about three weeks ago, I started having arm symptoms. They gradually worsened but I have been under tremendous stress while trying to get a handle on being a single, broke, mom and dealing with a self-centered asshole of an ex. A week ago, I ended up in the emergency room because my entire arm went numb and I was afraid I was having a stroke. THe ER did a CT scan of my brain and neck. The brain was normal and the neck has a small bulge of C6-C7. I saw a neurologist who thought that this may have happened from the cleaning products that I had been using but that he thought that everything looked okay. Dr. Sarno thinks that the stress has just built up to a breaking point and I need to see Dr. May (the psychologist) again. I will say the pain in my arm immediately increased when I found out that there was a bulge. I have started applying my TMS thinking again and the pain is beginning to decrease. It was barely there yesterday, but today it is more (may be because I am back at work today after a four day weekend... I am a teacher). I am hoping that this bout of TMS will be short lived, but I know that I have a lot going on right now. I will probably start seeing a counselor because I am really struggling with the pressures that I am under. I am really frustrated that I have symptoms again after being pain free for so long and with everything else I am dealing with. I am also trying to stay positive and not think at all about the symptoms. Good luck to everyone and don't give up! Let's encourage each other to stay the course!

Hi res. Well done on having such long pain free periods. That is something worth remembering especially when the pain gets bad. It seems like you are very aware of what has been going on emotionally in the past that has caused you pain and what is causing you the pain right now. You also seem to know what tools you need to help you in your quest so hopefully you will be able to get rid of it this time too.

You are obviously under an enormous amount of pressure- divorce- ex- work. I was a teacher for many years and as much as I enjoyed it I remember what hard work it was. It is a physically & emotionally demanding job what with preparation, marking, tests & exams, pastoral care, reports, research, endless meetings, dealing with parents etc etc.
As much as i enjoyed my 25 years of teaching I am glad that I am out of it.

Thx for the encouragement and I hope to hear about your victory over this episode of pain real soon.

Good Luck & Good Health
Mala
