What i really need is some success stories to combat any doubts that come up as I work through the program. I am looking for success stories similar to my pain so I can use that to fight of the doubts as they invade my confidence. I have seen benefits from working through the TMS program the past couple weeks, but by nature I'm a worrier. I just want to be able to pull out this thread whenever any doubts come up and say "hey this person had similar symptoms and structural problems and they re fine"
My symptoms: Neck & upper back pain for past year, nothing really into the arms or hands. Pain is more of an annoyance than pain. It feels like a deep pressure.
My structural diagnosis: midline disc bulge at C5/C6 with minimal bulges at C6/C7 & C4/C5
Thanks so much.

Thanks for the reply.
I checked out the success stories, but I couldnt really find anyone that related to me or my symptoms. I was hoping to find someone else through this post. |

Hi Patrick, I had the same symptoms that you are having. Mine worsened over the course of 10 years, because I didn't know about the mindbody connection. Once I found Dr. Sarno's work, I recovered and got my life back. My recovery story can be found here on the forum:
http://www.tmshelp.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5469
My diagnoses were the same as yours, along with a little DDD (degenerative disc disease) thrown in. Of course now I know that most people have some DDD and that was not the cause of my pain.
Good luck. You've come to the right place.
Best, Peg

Hi Patrick, I don't think it really matter where your doctor said your pain was coming from. All he has done is diagnosed a physical abnormality. If you believe that you are a TMS sufferer bulging disks c/5/, c/6 aren't important. They aren't what is causing the pain. Treat TMS as a mind body disorder. I had severe pain in my left hip area about 3 years ago. The orthopedist suggest that I would need a hip replacement when the pain really got intolerable( which I already thought it was) since he saw advanced arthritis in my left hip. So, I waited for a few weeks and the pain vanished..Except it was now in my right hip. Three years ago I could have opted for a hip replacement..Glad I went back to Sarno..My hips don't hurt at all. TMS pain moves around and around. Here today some place else tomorrow.
Keep trying to accept Dr. Sarno's MIND BODY philosophy and you will be on the road to getting rid of any TMS pain you have..no matter where it is.
Have faith , you will improve. I have.

It's also worth considering that structural diagnosises based on MRI scans are not always correct - because many patients may show up "abnormalities" without displaying any pain symptoms.....
quote: But what about MRI structural diagnosis for conditions like back pain and sciatica? There have been a number of studies which have demonstrated that a large proportion of patients with no symptoms of back pain will nevertheless have an disc “abnormality” show up on MRI scans.(7) The conclusion for one such study of 98 asymptomatic people carried out by Maureen C Jensen et al. was that “given the high prevalence of these findings, the discovery by MRI of bulges or protrusions in people with lower back pain may frequently be coincidental.” (7i)

Re other success stories for people with C4- bulges/ruptures:
Newmom -
quote: June 06, severe attack of back pain when I sneezed. Pain did not go away as quickly as the prior time. Went to doctor, had MRIs, showed bulged L3-4 and severe ruptured disc at L4-5. Doctor wanted to immediately perform surgery. I opted to take the conservative route instead.

S Diddy -
quote: MRI 1 month later showed herniation in L3 and L4. (i had 2 more MRIs in the following 5 years).

Kelvin -

I also have to ask, I read through all these success stories and people say after a few weeks of Dr. Sarno's program they were pain free. Some of them are people who just read the MindBody Prescription and did the program in the book without ever seeing him and they got better within a few weeks. Is the program just realizing you have TMS and reflecting on your stressors? Because after reading the books, thats really the only components to the program I see. Am i missing something?
Thanks,
Patrick |

In a nutshell it's accepting the TMS diagnosis and acting on the various recommended actions - meditation, journaling, de-conditioning the fear response to activity etc. I've written a page on it here http://www.rsi-backpain.co.uk/page4.html
With regards to whether it requires an appointment with a TMS medical professional, no - because it's all an individual-led process. But can it be useful? Absolutely - you get affirmation of the TMS theory by a qualified medical professional, you get to talk through some of your stresses/fears to someone else, and they can even check your body for tender points in specific regions which Sarno believes are strongly correlated to a diagnosis of TMS.

My recovery took much longer than a few weeks. It may have lessened within weeks, but took longer to resolve. During that time other symptoms tried to creep in (TMS equivalents), but as long as I saw them for what they were, they would not last.
It's been 10 years since first reading Sarno, so I don't remember how long exactly, but I do know that focusing too much on timing or the calendar is a hindrance to recovering.
