WOW! it's very interesting to see a sort of 'mainstream media' take on psychosomatic illnesses-- it's obvious that powerful distrust of your totalitarian state, couple with strong feelings of guilt and shame can have a powerful effect on people's minds, bodies, and feeling of health.
I'm predisposed to skepticism, however (and it's part of what predisposed me to TMS, no doubt). these doctors just seem to be checking for HIV or similar ailments-- even if these poor men DO have real illnesses, you can't find what you aren't looking for. I'm skeptical that the 'western' medical system can really evaluate our health effectively, and the amount of distrust I have in the Chinese healthcare system is even greater.
...but perhaps that type of distrust is exactly what's causing the illness in the first place!
Oh TMS is a tricky affliction... |

Don't have to be Chinese to get this--saw a patient very much like this a few years ago with various symptoms. Of course, since this is the USA, he had been worked up to the hilt with every test under the sun, though all you had to do was talk to the guy for five minutes to figure out he was incredibly anxious and guilty about his experience with a prostitute and all the symptoms were psychosomatic... |
