It's been a long time since I wrote..I have missed my friends on here and all the wisdom and healing..
I have always struggled with how much of my pain was related to a real injury, and how much was just TMS..In the past, this forum and Dr. Sarno's techniques helped me a great deal..
A week ago Saturday I slipped and fell on a puddle of water outside the restroom of a department store..Believe me, it was a real injury..I landed directly on my right knee, the same knee that has been injured three other times in my life..I also hurt my neck.
Thankfully, the knee MRI showed nothing torn..There was edema, mild, and mild chondromalcia sp? of the knee..The knee is still healing, but now the neck is acting up causing pain in the right middle finger and the upper arm..
This reminds me of years ago when I was diagnosed with herniated discs in my neck at C5-6 and C6-7..I have not had this pain in years..It was not caused from the fall, but happened after being examimed by the Dr. and wearing a very heavy magnetic dress to protect my breasts during x-rays..
Pain in the middle finger began within an hour of getting these tests..It subsided this weekend with ice and rest..Yesterday I got ultrasound on the neck and knee..I also carried some groceries..I woke up this morning with this finger and arm pain again..Frustrating and scary..I get myself so worked up that it is the disc again, that I have chest pains on top of everything..Chronically I deal w/ RSI of the wrists..Need help typing to keep the pain at bay and 'save' my wrists for painting. I also teach piano without playing it directly.
On a TMS level there is much stress in my life..I have not sold a painting since April and I have only five piano or voice students..Money is super tight and I am still living in Vegas, when I want to move home to New Jersey! I have rescued a third dog who I fell in love with and now moving home seems impossible..I am also in peri-menopause and that is truly a tough time for most women..The one thing I'm excited about is that I am recording a CD, finally! Lastly, I still long to find my soulmate and have a real family & this causes great stress/fear inside..Look forward to your thoughts..:)
Warmly, Karen |

Hi Karen. Welcome back.
Afraid your thoughts are firmly planted in the physical realm. You refer to old injuries, discs, RSI, etc.
You should certainly expect some pain from the fall, but since you have ruled out serious problems, you should accept that your body is strong and will heal completely.
It is not surprising that your unconscious mind would sieze this opportunity to re-awaken all the old doubts and fears about your physical state. You have to fight back.
As we have debated in the past, I believe that it is not possible to recover from TMS if you continue to harbor this train of thought:
"I have always struggled with how much of my pain was related to a real injury, and how much was just TMS."
If you leave the door open to the possibility of the pain being caused by injury, then this falls short of the commitment required for recovery. It is essential to ignore the symptoms and accept the source is psychological and not physical.
I'm afraid until you stop your mind from going down that path, you will continue to have psychogenic pain episodes. |

Don't know if this will help you, Singer, but as an Occupational Therapist I can tell you there is no neck injury which results in pain in the middle finger. Listen to Dave, he's absolutely right! As to the other issues, don't know why having dogs prevents moving back to New Jersey. Good luck with the recording! |

Hi Dave, Thank you for your wisdom and compassion.. :) I know you are right, and I hope I can fight back before this turns into a long term battle again.. When it is acute like this, and some of it is from the fall, it's hard to determine what's real and what's my unconscious freaking out again.. I do have alot going on, but then that seems to be the case ever since moving to Vegas 15 years ago.. You know my story.. Hope you are doing well!
Hi Judith, Thanks for responding.. I read online that middle finger and upper arm pain is related to C7 in the neck.. I know, big mistake to read about symptoms online, always makes things worse! As for my dogs, my 2 elderly dogs would be fine staying in Vegas with my surrogate bro who I live with.. However, the amazing 4 year old wolf hybrid and I are soulmates and must stay together.. He is 183 pounds and my male roommates have to walk him, I can't even when I'm feeling good.. I would have to find a house share with a huge backyard that's not expensive for a starving artist.. That is a tall order, but I believe in miracles.. Right now, I just want to feel better so I can continue recording my CD.. Thanks for the well wishes on that! God Bless, Karen |
