Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if you could share any particular techniques you found helpful for getting past certain movements that, due to conditioning, cause you pain. For example, I've isolated one specific movement that gets me every time...bending over. Certain ways of bending are worse than others--left foot forward is fine. I can pretty much do anything else, and when I stop bending, I recover quickly, but that specific movement keeps pulling me back.

I guess the idea here is that it's not really the movement that is causing the pain, it's just a conditioned response, an association that has developed over time. In my case it's left SI joint area and bending. I'm familiar with the general Sarno program (think psychological, journal, resume activity), but I just thought I would see if anyone had encountered this in their experience.

Did you have a certain movement like this that caused pain? What worked for you? If you want to refer me to another part of the forum where this topic already exists, that's fine.

Thank you!
JT

Hi JT,

My preference is for a gradual approach:

I hope this helps.

For me, it's a mental pause and a self suggestion.

I used to have difficulty making LOTS of movements. If I simply thought to myself "I'm fine, or I'm good" before making the movement, I could ward off the pain or spasm. If I went about the movement tentatively with fear - the pain was always there.

Change your thoughts right before you make the movement....do it every time and you may find that it helps.

Worked for me.
