Just joined this forum, hi everyone!
I was wondering whether there is a preferred style of psychotherapy for TMS.
I live in England, is TMS treament available here?
Kind regards,

Hi JoGo, welcome to the forum.
There are 2 TMS doctors in the UK (one in Surrey and one in Brighton)and one physiotherapist (in Yorkshire). They have all trained with Dr Sarno. Details can be found on the wiki here http://tmswiki.wetpaint.com/page/TMS+Professional+Survey+Responses Whereabouts are you?
I think the Brighton doctor also uses a psychotherapist well versed in TMS but any therapist who believes in the mindbody connection and who'd be willing to read one of Dr Sarno's books would be worth a go.

Hi JoGo
I don't have any of Dr Sarno's books to hand but, from memory, I believe he recommends psychodynamic therapy. On the other hand, I know of a Cognitive Behaviour Hypnotherapist in the London area who claims that she treats TMS patients successfully. If that were your preferred choice of therapy, I believe she could put you in touch with colleagues in other parts of the UK.
As you may have gathered from reading this forum, different people find different 'psychological' approaches helpful and then again, it doesn't seem as if psychotherapy is always necessary to make progress in any case.
As far as your question about the availability of TMS treatment in the UK is concerned, I think this is currently a very real difficulty when it comes to diagnosis but hopefully things will improve in the future. |

I recommend hypnosis, particularly age regression with reframing. Make sure your hypnotherapist is aware that you are seeing him/her with the intention of identifying unconscious traumatic events from your past and childhood that may be contributing to your current pain and/or symptoms. However, make sure that the therapist is appropriately credentialed as there are many commercial hypnotists who don't have the necessary training to do this work, in my opinion. Certification by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (www . asch . net) is the gold standard in that regard.
Psychotherapy with a therapist who is unaware of TMS and/or the mindbody connection is often not beneficial for the purposes of alleviating symptoms. Traditional psychotherapy is also very time consuming and expensive. Hypnotherapy is quicker, more focused, and in my experience more effective as it provides immediate insight into the unconscious processes that cause psychosomatic disorders. However, I always recommend trying Dr. Schubiner's online program first before one attempts any therapy at all as it is specifically geared toward the treatment of TMS patients. Good luck!

Hi Sarita,
I don't know if you've seen it yet, but the wiki's page on Dr. Schubiner's program has an awful lot of reviews.
My personal feeling is that it would be a great complement to psychotherapy, to really jumpstart your progress. If it isn't enough, though, I think that there is an awful lot that working with a licensed practitioner can add.
