It struck me just now reading posts on this site. Some people look to TMS for the answer to everything. Almost like it's a catch all for anything that is going wrong in our bodies.
Without offending the TMS purists, here's my 2 cents.
It's all connected.
As a result of my sister raising an autistic 4 year old - I began reading the works of Dr. Mark Hyman. He's written books called:
The UltraMind Solution - about brain disorders. Fascinating stuff. Ultra Metabolism Ultra Prevention The Ultra Simple Diet
You won't find a more firm believer in TMS than me. I know with 100% certainty that TMS is what has caused me varying degrees of pain over the past 12 years. On and off.
At the same time - I DO believe that body chemistry is critical and likely one of the things at play in TMS.
Oxygen deprivation is something Sarno indicates is at the root of our pain. This clearly could be caused by body chemistry changes as a result of the stress response and not enough relaxation response.
Thoughts create physical changes. Fear, anxiety, anger, sadness all change our bodies.
I know I've mentioned it before in another post, but if you are having digestive problems - you might want to look beyond the emotional connection and TMS. That may be part of it and a great place to start, but there might be more at play.
It's all connected.
The model I hope to implement is one that combines TMS with this new concept of functional medicine that Dr. Hyman teaches.
From his book:
The 7 Points of Wellness 1. Optimize nutrition 2. balance your hormones 3. Cool off inflammation 4. Fix your digestion 5. Enhance detoxification 6. Boost Energy Metabolism 7. Calm your mind (the TMS component)
The big question I have is whether or not TMS is the CAUSE of all problems within this incredible system we have called a human body. Or, is it one component of many that could or should be evaluated.
I'm no doctor, but from my point of view. - it's all connected.
Notice, none of the areas of wellness incorporate standard treatments for pain. Manipulation, take pills, get injections, get surgery. None of these have proven to improve our overall wellness.
I like this Dr. Hyman guy. Whether you have a specific problem or not - his thoughts are very eye opening.
Here's some of his stuff on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=dr+hyman&aq=f
Let me know what you think...

Everything is connected..... it's just that it's not connected the way everyone wants it to be The E-G-O gets in the way..... and dumbs us down.
The message of Hyman is nothing one can't find anywhere online. I don't mean to dismiss it. With all the different messengers giving the same/similar message......you never know which one is put in a way that makes sense to your belief system..... therefore you're able to embrace it .... and actually make changes to your life.
For myself..... TMS is just a phrase.....a symbol of life in distress. What causes dis-ease of the mind, body and spirit? That will never be known to conclusion..... and the pursuit of an answer undermines the very act of living right here, right now. It's life. Life causes life.
I have asked myself in the past, do I have TMS? I don't know...... does it matter what it's called when you're mind is distressed and your body is full of pain? Does the energy we call "mind" create all pain? That has been a belief for a very long time..... centuries and centuries. In that sense..... TMS is a modern take on the age-old belief. Again.... not to dismiss it..... because as I said..... different messengers get through to different people. Most people going to an MD are not reading about Chinese or Indian dis-ease belief systems!
In many ways.... out modern industrial culture that was to make our lives "easier" .... has made us dumb.... and angry about it. We have lost touch with ourselves. We are now human machines...... we're supposed to live our life by an imaginary round thing called a clock. We're "supposed" to have a job, own a home... have kids, be friendly to everyone we meet, take a vacation..... an on and on and on. All these expectations...... and what is forgotten and neglected it just to be. Be whatever.... whoever. Be no-one. Just be.
I'll share this with you ..... I don't know who I am. Not a clue. I can tell you what I do.... how I do it....why.... when.... where and such..... but who am I? My ego has all sorts of ideas.... like: I am what I do..... where I do it... what I feel about it....... and the topper of all..... I AM MY PAIN! Therefore I deserve to suffer for it! That's a huge ego trip. More more more. Give me more drama PLEASE! The ego is like a house guest that you invited for the night moving in, eating all your food, taking your bedroom, making a total mess of everything..... then saying "why is your house so messed up?" It's a kick to your gut. ( I use the term ego, for lack of a better one at this moment)
I may experience pain..... but I NEED NOT SUFFER for it. Is pain mine? Do I own it? Did I ask for it? Do I "deserve" it? No, no no and no. Can I let suffering go? YES!
I can let it go. Let life flow, instead of stagnating in the pool of my ego. This is simple to do..... but not necessarily easy. I've been so programmed by life to live a certain way......it takes a conscious effort to change. Just as a building is made one brick at a time, a lake is formed from a single drop of water.... so to I must take a step at a time. There is no time frame. No guarantee of anything. There is no "success" either , as that is the ego once again trying to quantify the experience of life... which is impossible. Life is timeless.

If we put a lot of junk into our bodies, regardless of how clear we are psychologically and spiritually, we are bound to have some physical problems. |
