Last night at work was pretty bad. I had a lower back pain that I have never experience before. It was like someone was sticking a knife in back and my right leg felt even weaker than normal..I don't understand it I had a great weekend and last week was pretty good...I was thinking I was making good progess and was convinced it was TMS...But now I am doubting it again.. I have be going to the gym and lightly working out...Did I over do it? When I got to work I felt fine. But as the day went on it slowly got worse and my fear and anxiety went up with it...I don't undestand how things can get worse all of the sudden..I am so disappointed, I fought back tears all night...Finally when I got home it all came out and I wept. I am so tired of worrying, I just want to feel like I used to...I have cried more in the last year than I probable have in my whole life.. I want this to be TMS but maybe it isn't. I work at a warehouse and lift and bend alot...I don't want to lose my job. I just want to get better. This thing likes to play head games with me.. Everytime I think I am getting better it comes back..everytime...I understand the body is suppose to heal but I just get worse. I have read the books and I fit the profile very well..I was convinced TMS was what is was but I just don't know...Should I give up the gym again? This seems to always eventully bring on a relapse...But is it normal to start hurting several days after and not during?

So sorry to hear of your difficulty Joey. That sounds pretty scary and discouraging. Have you been able to see an MD who treats TMS?

Forgive me if I forget your history, but have you had testing to rule out a serious condition?

It still could be TMS. You said you felt fine over the weekend and even when you first went to work. If I remember correctly aren't you the guy who was changed to a shift you don't like?

The TMS could have begun due to the conflict surrounding your new work schedule, but then your worry and anxiety could have caused it to worsen and persist. Perhaps if you could have taken a few minutes to relax and search for a reason, along with some reassuring self talk, it might not have gotten as bad. Just a thought.

Take care,
Peg

Yes I have been to doctors and a Neuro have had tons of blood work several MRI's confirms L3 to S1 as bulges or herniations worst at L4-L5 (5-6mm) were nerves are being touched..TMS makes so much sense to me, I had year and a half of upper back and shoulder pain that "mysteriously" has gone away 95% since this lower back legs thing has taken hold..I know this screams TMS...I remember one year ago I was very worried about my shoulder and upper back and it has gotten so much better...I mind won't let go of the physical..

JoeyT,

It's sounds to me as though you're a worrier! Well, I am too, and you know this only makes the pain worst.

It's hard to believe in TMS, espeically when one thinks it's physical or real injury such in my case!!!

Hang in there!!! Maybe seeing a TMS doctor might help you put this to rest. I wish there was TMS doctor in my area....

Keep think psychological and don't worry about what the MRI says.

Studies have shown that STRUCTURAL abnormalities are NORMAL and are not the cause of pain...

How many people out there go through so much surgeries only to have them fail...Sure they correct the abnormality, but why do they still have pain...

This is EXACTLY what Dr. Sarno was experiencing in his practiice and finally got the CORRECT answer!!!

You don't need surgery you are fine!! Your healthy!!!

Take it from one worrier who becomes very obessed when pain starts. It only excerbates the pain and makes it worst when you fear and worry about it.

Hang in there and take advise from the veterans who have overcome their pain...

".I know this screams TMS"

I agree.

"I mind won't let go of the physical."

Perhaps you need more evidence to convince you. Some of us have read other books that talk about the mindbody connection and that can help because they all support Dr. Sarno's theory.

Aside from reading this forum, it might also help you to read on different TMS sites like Dr. Schubiner's (yourpainisreal.com) or the tmswiki.wetpaint.com. on the wiki, there are links to videos you can watch as well as a very informative site by Kelvin Gunnell (?spelling last name).

I'm not sure if you are aware, but there are studies in the medical journals that show disc bulges and herniations (as well at arthritis and spinal stenosis) in patients with NO back pain.

As long as you think your pain might be physical, it will continue. You need to try to convince yourself that it's cause is emotional.Easier said than done, I know. Keep looking at the evidence that you have already identified. It just doesn't make sense that a structural problem would cause pain that comes and goes.

Best,
Peg

TMS feeds on fear. I know it's really hard, but try to control your fear. Meditate. Read one of Sarno's books (it always helped to calm me down for some reason).

Also the obvious...examine what was going on in your life emotionally when the pain got worse. Really be honest with yourself. You may be surprised at what you find.

Hi

don't worry about working out, until you consider yourself fully healed, and have a handle on the subtleties of TMS.
you need to see all the lifting and bending at work as GOOD for your back and helpful in overcoming the fear of injury.
don't be afraid to cry, in private, crying is a great stress relief and you can actually feel amazing after a good cry, let that **** OUT! that's the whole idea of treating TMS. you're lucky, most men (me included) find it almost impossible to cry. we've been trained to repress emotions from an early age.
I had problems doing yoga, it always brought on symptoms when I did it at home, in the class I felt great, at home pain. obviously it was my mind causing the pain, I had to take a concerted approach to getting over it by doing yoga every day, while journaling about the pain and watching the sarno video at:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6660313127569317147

and reading in the sarno books.
watch this video 10-20 times, and/or get a copy of the mind body workbook by Dr. Schecter, and keep reading, to convince yourself that it is probable that you have tms and CAN get over it with learning, understanding and patience.
you've already had SOME success with it, so it already is working, you need to recognize these bizarre/new symptom patterns for what they are: typical TMS. you have to WIN at the head games your mind is playing one way or another.
any questions write me directly

The thing is when I cry, it is because I am sick of worry about my back and sick of what this has done to my life. Not about some issue early in life. Is this type of crying effective?

PV is right, TMS feeds on fear. I used to repeat over and over the daily reminders from HBP, all day long. My pain was also like a knife going in and being twisted in my back so I can totally relate to how you feel. You are still in the early days and it can take a while for the fear to receed.

Joey -

I am brand new to the site. All I can say at this point is that I totally feel for you...I have been crying on and off for weeks. 10 years ago, I went to Dr. Sarno for a back issue and "the cure" was IMMEDIATE. For 10 solid years, I did not have another major flare.

What I am experiencing now has been going on for months and I am "walking the line" between believing and the medical ways out of this nightmare. I feel in my heart of hearts, that there isn't anything truly "wrong" and yet, it's got me in its grip.

Hang in there!! If knowing there are others out there who understand helps you, then you've got that for sure.
