Hi All,
I really need some help. I don't know where to begin, but I have read Dr. Sarno's (The Mindbody Prescription) it help with excuriating neck pain. However, my latest obession is my joint and that maybe I have arthritis or even rheumatoid.
Some of you might have seen my previous post "thumb pain" X-ray clean. Well, I somehow manage to hurt myself or so I am guessing while lifting heavy weights (I am girl).
Anyhow it has been over three weeks and the pain is worst then ever. I haven't been able to lift or play my guitar which is the worst. I tried to play last night, but my thumb hurt.
The worst of it is I do suffer with catasophize thinking. Damn, I just had a clean X-ray, but something inside of me keeps thinking of have Arthritis. The what if's keep going around.
In 2007 of August I was check for Rheumatoid because my index mcp joint on the left side was hurting with NO visible sign of anything wrong. That year I had an X-ray plus a whole bunch of blood work that was done for rheumatoid that was NEGATIVE!
Doc. said I don't have it and not too worry! Well, after that incident I have until three weeks ago to the day at the gym...
With my thumb my doc, said that my X-ray shows nothing (it didn't) but the pain still remains with in 7 days he wants me to comeback so he can send me to a hand specialist to run a MRI
I suffer from hypochondria which doesn't help and I am not going to lie as I did surf the net...I am scared....Last night I journal all my emotions, but nothing pain has not stopped.
A part of me wants to go back to the gym and defy the pain...Lift with it, but another part is scared...
It's funny how the main is located in my MCP joint only in the thumb. Could it be ligament strain, maybe but it hurts when I touch my mcp thumb joint how could ligament strain hurt there or even when I bend it?
Sorry I know this is a TMS forum, and I am sounding hypo...I just don't know what to do.... Any advise on how I can stop worrying and try to apply TMS theory would be helpful.
I am one step from going to a hand specialist?
Thanks Kalo |

Kalo, if it'll make you feel better to go to a hand specialist, please do so. You have a tremendous "plus" in your court already that nothing you have so far suspected has been diagnosed. All tests are negative. Also, arthritis is a mind/body disorder. It's on a list of ailments I got from a TMS doc, along with allergies, GERD, IBS, etc. So even if you did develop arthritis, it is likely caused by an emotion and can be healed with a change in your feelings!
A change in mindset is needed to beat this. Only you can do that for yourself! It's an inside job. When the what if appears, counter it with a positive thought or start journaling about your fears. Perhaps ask "why" after each "what if" sentence and see where you end up. Maybe realizing it's an unfounded fear!
You also have to believe this treatment plan is gong to work for you. If you journal but think "this isn't working" that is what will manifest. Journaling has healed many of us. It works. Not immediately but it does work.

Lori,
Thank you for answering my post!!! Because of my hypochondria nature I want to find out why the pain, which is useless in away...
You are right as my X-ray comeback clean, however, my mind keeps saying thats because your arthritic hands aren't showing on an X-ray. STUPID, huh?
You are also correct that lately I am starting to doubt the TMS theory...Not really but in mind keeps telling me that I am injured...
Word for the wise "if anyone hear suffers from Hypochondria or "What if" STAY AWAY from surfing the net as it will only add to ones DOUBT and FEARS.
Thanks again! |

Kalo, googling a symptom is the worst thing because it will give you worst case scenario. I remember when I looked for herniated disc I was horrified at what I read and broke out in a sweat! (before learning of TMS)
Have you read the Treatment Plan section in The Divided Mind? I would suggest reading that daily as that is part of the treatment plan Dr. Sarno gives his patients. It seems redundant, but it takes awhile to sink into our brains which is why it is needed daily.
Maybe kindly and lovingly talking to yourself when the what if thought appears: "[name] it's ok, this is just an obsessive thought and [emphatically:] I have no use for it any longer. I am fine and I am free!"
Also, where did you learn this behavior? Did something happen when you were younger? If someone you know was like that, you can counter with "I am not [person]--I am my own person."
I would say hypochondria fits into OCD, which has been healed by those who applied the TMS treatment plan. So don't give up! There is most certainly hope for a time without pain!

Hi Lori,
I have ALWAYS had hypochondriatic tendencies since I was a little kid. I think for me it's just what sum might call it cataphize thinking or "fear prone personality", I always expect the worst.
I fit Dr. Sarno's personality trait to a tee. Suffered from stress as a child do to learning problems. To hard on myself that is for sure and experienced a lot of failures.
The worst of it all some dumb doctor who knows my parents and myself told me that I will probably develop arthritis just like my parents because it genetic. Why do they tell one this. Mind you this WASN'T my current doctor, but a friend of ours who knew my parents and took care of them and myself. Thank Goodness he retired.
Okay, so since hit a certain age that is when all my pain's in my hand joint started...Funny, huh?
Thanks Again for the Advise! Very good indeed! |

augh! why do docs say stuff like that! They don't realize that they planted the seed for your brain! Well, you can undo that untrue thought.
scene comes to mind from Austin Powers where Frau Farbissina yells "Lies! ALL LIES!!"
Dr. Scott Brady had a similar situation in Pain Free For Life. He built the expectation that he'd have pain because of what a doc (or p/t--can't recall now) said to him once. . . well, he's pain-free now! His book has lots of contemplative questions too, with ideas for journaling topics.

I guess the mind is very powerful. Seriously, in my 20's I would have NEVER have worried about arthritis.
It's funny on once I hit a certain age I started these wierd symptons.
I think I need to branch out and get other books which will help me as well and stop going on the internet.
Thanks again and hopefully my next post will be that I am pain free!!! |

Pain = Stress X Resistance Get rid of the FEAR and your pain should go away. Every time you have a symptom you turn it into a major event and frighten yourself into believing it is something terrible.
It isn't easy to change ones thinking over night. But, I am sure you can do it. Marsha |
