My main TMS problem was back pain. As I sit here typing this, my back feels great but my right leg is numb. It's been numb since Saturday. I haven't had this checked out medically yet, but it screams Symptom Imperative. It's making me a little nervous because I don't know *for sure* that it's TMS (it's the cynical, doom-and-gloom perfectionist in me). So I'm actively taking steps to soothe my nerves.
I'm sure I read in one of Sarno's books that symptom imperative means that the process is working. The brain is trying to hold onto the physical distraction by putting it somewhere else. But I can't remember which book I read this in. Can anyone help? I'd like to reread that chapter.
For those of you in more advanced stages of recovery, did you experience symptom imperative and was it a precursor to significant improvement in all of your symptoms? Just curious. |

Haaa, good ole symptom imperative. I cant say whether it is a good sign or not, but i can say this...
I had symptom imperative before i started learning about tms, so that would say its really no sign at all. But, more importantly it is a major tool in recovery and once you understand and get over it, it will speed the recovery process. Basically, if you fall prey to it your just reinforcing that you dont have tms. The moment you can say "ya its just tms jumping around", is the moment you really and truly believe in tms and thus can start getting on with your life. Use it for what its worth...
Hope this post helps. |

Well, guess what - my achilles feels okay after running a really long run this weekend and now my hamstring is killing me. What scares me is that I had a bout of hamstring stuff for at least 4 months (what injury lasts that long?) this summer and into the fall so I am treading on thin ice here --- i know how hamstring pain feels and I am getting frightened. I am hoping it will go the way the achilles pain did..... gone. |

Feeling frightened of pain is surely going to lead to no good. You have to let the fear go completely. And you asked what injury lasts 4 months? Back injuries do, and they are caused by TMS, is it safe to say that it could apply to your hamstring...ill leave that up to you to decide.
If its any consolation, i have had knee pain for over a year, and it only really subsided once i wrapped my mind around tms. But yeah, there were moments where i thought i was crazy, telling myself it was fine.
