Just trying to figure out what it means when pain is shifting from one side of lower back to the other during the treatment process. Has anyone experience this and results.

I think if the pain moves location it's what they call "TMS on the run", and is a good sign that the work you are doing is having an effect.

I had pain move to all sorts of different locations, or sometimes be replaced by an equivalent such as vertigo.

Dr. Sarno calls it the symptom imperative.

I don't think there is any significance in where the pain moves to. If it moves to a particular place that doesn't worry you or get your attention much then it probably won't last long. If it moves to a place that does concern you more and you give it lots of attention then it's more likely to stick around for longer.
Whenever I've had this happening I try to treat all the symptoms in the same way and apply the TMS methods. I know that if something new pops up while I'm recovering from TMS, it is most likely the symptom imperative.

I consider it a sign that the treatment is working. The brain is modifying its strategy.

If the pain were due to a structural cause, it would not move around.

Hi,

I've had pain and discomfort that swaps from the entire one side of my body to the other side ever since I first got really ill 4 years ago. This was happening even before doing the TMS work. It seems to swap over sometimes after a nights sleep, when I get really upset about something (especially if I have to talk about it) and if I have a moment where my mind drifts and therefore not thinking about it. I suppose these are all signs of TMS aren't they even though it used to happen before starting the TMS work? I have noticed in the past where I have had to speak to someone about things that upset me the pain gets worse but now I know about TMS the pain must increase and swap sides because I don't want to discuss it and my unconscious is trying to repress it. I feel myself tense up. I seem to find it hard to just let my tears and emotions flow.

Also just want to ask - is the pain you have that swaps from side to side the same ie are the sensations the same on both sides? I have a pressure type pain on my left and a prickly burning pain on the right.
