AGH. i was carrying out the garbage last night and slipped the last few carpeted steps. My legs went out from under me and I landed on my right hip/pelvis/butt on one of the stairs.
I had just finished hearing an interview on the radio with Jena Fisher from the office about how she broke her spine after falling on the stairs, so I felt pretty sure I didn't break anything. :)
Still, I'm kind of upset. there's no noticeable bruise and I rested after and iced my bum. I am achy today in my back and leg, but it's not excrutiating.
I'm definitely fearing my brain latching onto this as an excuse to lay off exercising. On the other hand, I don't want to actually harm myself. Any advice on how many days to rest?

Wait no longer than a week. Ice for the first 48 hours. Whether tms or not, rest should not be longer than 1 week or atrophy sets in. Not saying you should be running marathons, but bed rest for longer than a week is not advised. If (chronic) pain persist longer than 2 or 3 weeks, you need to look at the tms model, BUT you need to get a check up from a DR. to be safe. |

I was actually wondering why you slipped? Were your instincts not up enough to consider your surroundings more in the situation? Was your mind drifting somewhere else while you were doing something you should have been focusing on?

Sorry to hear about yr fall. 2 months ago I was having lunch with a friend who was visiting from NZ. She got up to go to the loo so I asked for the bill and decided to get up. For some reason my leg got caught around the table's leg (don't ask me how)and I fell really hard on the stone floor. I landed on my left hip. The sound was so loud that all the waiters came running. I was shocked but to my amazement I picked myself up and sat down for a while. The pain was not bad so I decided not to give it too much thought and we continued with our day as planned. I forgot about it till a few days later when I noticed a big bruise on that side.
I thought that's no biggy and forgot about it. I'm sure if I obsessed, it would have become worse.
Keep an eye on the pain. If it really increases in intensity see a doctor. If it is a bit achy it's probably fine.

Thanks for the replies. I did ice that night and took some advil the next day.
It was kinda sore the next day and there's a giant bruise now, but I was able to dance my butt off on NYE and felt fine! So, it appears I'll survive. :D
That's an interesting question about the power of suggestion on the slipping, as I was hearing about that earlier in the day. I was carrying an extra heavy garbage can out in front of me, trying not to lean it on my body since it was kinda gross. Combine that with wearing junky slippers with no traction = wipeout!
