I know I have TMS - no question there. But could anyone help me understand the relationship between TMS and back spasms? My back will spasm when I am doing the littlest thing but not spasm (usually) when I do more strenous things. As soon as the spasm eases up, usually about 3 - 4 weeks, I am hit with another one. Then there are times when I might go several weeks without a spasm. What is actually happening to the muscles and why is it happening when my back spasms?
Thank you so much for your insight. |

Jade more properly put for the purposes of this board and your "cure" is what is happening with your psyche? What is going on emotionally in your life to trigger the TMS spasm?
The physical answer is the easy one. I believe it's stated right on the home page. Something to the effect that, the unconscious mind shuts off the circulation to a region when the reservoir of internal rage fills up and socially unacceptable thoughts threaten to break through the surface.
Good luck, hope that helps. |

Hi Jade,
You might like to read: http://saveyourself.ca/articles/low-back-muscle-pain-9hUkep.php
which is by a massage therapist in Canada who is familiar with Sarno. I read this article in addition to Sarno during a bad episode of back pain. As soon as I read it I lost the fear that had been perpetuating the episode and I recovered not long afterward. It tried to come back as sciatic pain a couple of weeks later but I felt more confident and it dissipated when my "bodymind" realised it wasn't scaring me - much (I say much because I did experience fear and doubt but it was balanced by me saying over and over that there was nothing wrong with my back and I was healthy).
Note that the author of this article does (of course) recommend massage for some people but I didn't focus on this. I focused on his succint way of saying reassuring that your back is strong and will not be broken if you move the wrong was (that's hard to let go of in a spasm or in sciatic pain and I'm so pleased to experience that it's possible).
I wouldn't go and read the rest of the articles on his website if you are new to the TMS theory as they stray more into other "treatments" but I was glad I paid the $US 10 for this one as it was another article re TMS and I like to have as many different people's writings so I don't have to reread only one (I get bored easily).

Thanks to all who posted. I understand about the blood not circulating due to repression of rage but when that happens I usually just esperience pain. The spasming of the back was what was hard to understand. How poor circulation could cause the muscles to spasm. I can get the spasms to stop by talking to myself etc. but the pain is there for so long and I don't know what to do about that. |

One more thing. As I said, I can get the spasming to stop but the pain that the spasm caused lingers for days and days. How do I get rid of that? If I try heat, massage etc. I am afraid I am giving it too much attention and will only make things worse. When my foot starts hurting, I can get that pain to stop and it won't linger, but the spasm causes brief excruiating pain while it is spasming and I can get the spasm to stop but then there is so much soreness afterwards that I can't get rid of.
Thanks so much. I |

Yes, this is the key. You can't pay any attention to the pain. If you do then it will continue because is is being successful at distracting you.
Don't do anything to "fix" the pain. Ignore it as best you can. |
