I would like to know if members use aids like topical creams or menthol pathches to get relief from the pain in their fight against tms and what your thoughts are on their usage. Do they help? Thanks.

Hi No I don't use anything like that. As far as I know they wouldn't be able to help with my repressed emotions. Besides even if they could help soothe those uncomfortable emotions, I wouldn't know where to apply the cream or patch. Okay, that was an attempt at a joke.
The creams and patch might give some relief, but if your mind still believes your problem is physical, it will be hard to resolve the pain.
I don't look at healing my tms as a fight. I try to accept and understand the protective mechanism my bodymind is using and why. This is the only way I was able to resolve my years of pain.

The reason I ask is that Sarno says we can use painkillers so if that is the case why not patches and creams. I don't like taking plls especially anti inflammatories as they upset my tummy. I think the idea is to get some relief from the pain so that you are in a better frame of mind to focus on emotional stuff.

Good point.
I agree that they could be a better option to relieve pain than medications. With the benefit of having less potential for side effects. I never thought about using those years ago, but they would have been a reasonable option.

IMO wearing a patch can become a constant reminder of the symptoms. It is not like taking a pill and forgetting about it. |

Dave,
Thanks for your comment but I honestly don't agree. Everytime u hurt you are reminded that 'oh it's time to take a pill'. There is a strong association between pill and pain. Worse if u have tummy upset because of the pills. It becomes a double reminder.
With a simple menthol patch, u can stick it on your back and simply forget about the pain. And it usually lasts the whole day. The idea is if a simple patch can give me relief there can't be anything seriously wrong with my back.
That's how I look at it anyway.

Yeah - exactly! I don't want to be taking a drug for a pain that menthol can mask.'
And of course, we each make our own choices, don't we?

Hi Wavy Soul. How are you doing?
I just wanted to ask if you find any problems with the menthol patches. I find that if I use them continuously for 4 days or more they irritate my skin a bit. Do you have that problem?
I usually have one on during the day and remove it before sleeping to let the skin breathe a bit.
Thanks

I use them almost every day! I find they distract me from the pain and allow me to obsess less and focus on other things. I also keep one on all day until bedtime and sometimes notice some redness afterwards, but nothing major. |

Here's my view of this. When I'm in so much pain that I can't think straight, I take something. Then, I can think about what's really going on.
Since following Howard Schubiner's program based on Sarno's work, www.yourpainisreal.com, this happens much less frequently and I use advil or motrin. Before then, I was using prescription stuff.
I am so grateful to have this program to follow - tweaking it to work for me feels very empowering.
I frequently use Tiger Balm ultra strength (the others don't work for me), China Gel, and BioFreeze - and don't think twice about it. Tiger Balm also comes in a patch which I've used sometimes. I prefer rubbing it in to using a patch though.
I also work with the book Pain Free - the exercises remind me of some yoga poses with longer holdings and I feel much better afterwards. I spend lots of time on the floor in various propped up positions - again it feels kind to my psyche and my body, and allows me to work creatively and comfortably.
I like to adapt this program so it works for me - and thank God it is working really well. I feel very grateful and blessed. |

Vipassana, Would you mind briefly sharing with us what is offered in the online program? Is it readings, guided journaling, worksheets? I was interested enough to go to the website, but when I saw the cost, I hesitated, as there is no "preview" of what's in store. Any kind of introduction I think would be helpful. I have kicked my neck and shoulder pain but am now dealing with more headaches than usual. |
