Ok,

so thank you so much to those who responded to my last post, it has been very helpful.

Since really taking on Sarno's theory and committing to journalling everyday, I have reduced my pain. Without a doubt. I no longer pop Advil all day, I am able to stand for a little longer and really, while the pain is still there - it has subsided significantly.

I even practised 10 mins of Yoga - moving through the pain - for the first time in 3 months.

However. I am still feeling the 'pinch' in my left buttock and the pain is there - and a significant amount of tingling all the way down to my toes.

while I did practice yoga yesterday, afterwards the sensation down my leg increased. As it does after I do any physical activity no matter how loud I yell that I 'know what's going on' - I even say over and over again 'oxygen, oxygen' sending that message down to the area.

I read on Dr. Shubiner's website that an impinged nerve root is not necessarily TMS.

I looked at my MRI results -as follows:

'Large disk extrusion centrally and to the left at the L5/S1 level with left S1 impingement. Incidental conjoined left L4 and L5 roots'

My Orthopeadic Dr. said that it is not dangerous and I should just continue taking pain killers/anti inflammatories, do some Mackenzie exercises and see him in 6 weeks. I believe he said that as I was adamant that I was not going to take any injections and rejected any idea of surgery.

My question is - could the pain be TMS - but the tingling actually physcially related to the nerve impingement?

And if there is a nerve impingement - what are the modalities that work best, to release it?

Thanks for any feedback.

If you're having success right now with TMS treatment, your best bet is to assume it's all TMS and see if it all goes away. If your impingement is not dangerous anyway (presuming it is even the cause -- note the "not necessarily"), then the best thing is not to focus on it, just work overall on your pain and see if it all goes away.

Don't overthink this. It's pretty simple, even though not easy.

This kind of thinking is entirely inconsistent with TMS. It is a common trap people fall into, attempting to treat some of their symptoms as TMS but others as structural.

If you go down this path, you cannot succeed at treating your TMS, because it keeps your thoughts firmly planted in the physical realm.

You are giving too much "life" to the symptoms, and by doing so, they will continue to distract you, and thus the brain will see it as a success and perpetuate them.

At this point you have nothing to lose by completely ignoring the symptoms as best you can. You have ruled out any serious problems, and even gotten an orthopedist to agree that the symptoms are benign. If you want to treat these symptoms as TMS you need to commit 100% to the treatment, and that means to forget completely about the MRI results and accept that the symptoms are benign, and start to examine the psychological reasons for the pain.

If you go down the path of exercise and continue to see the orthopedist, this is completely incompatible with TMS treatment. So if that is the path you choose for now, forget about TMS until you are ready to fully commit.
