Exerpt from "The Power of Now"

Carl Jung tells in one of his books of a conversation he had with a Native American chief who pointed out to him that in his perception most white people have tense faces, staring eyes, and a cruel demeanor. He said:

"They are always seeking something. What are they seeking? The whites always want something. They are always uneasy and restless. We don't know what they want. We think they are mad."

Btw, not meant to have a racist tone to it, but rather I felt this was a good description of the origins of tms in the western world

It describes us TMS sufferers, too! I know I'm always vigilant about (seeking) my symptoms. Ooh, what was that? Should I Google it?? And then I always end up feeling worse and MUCH more anxious. And therefore more vigilant, all over again.

Whew. I'm taking meditation classes and trying to break that cycle. They say the constant vigilance is part of the trauma response, too, BTW. I really appreciated your Levine post, skizzik.

i have this problem. it feels like part of me is constantly scrambling to "do something." it never sits and rests and takes it all in. it feels like a really freaked out kid inside me trying to tear its way out all the time. or a demon or something. i'm not sure what it is. i woke up this morning and felt it tugging and trying to pull me in different directions. always looking for something better. so futile.

so yeah, tense face for sure.

ive got theories on this stuff. i think most of it has to do with the way we get shamed for expressing ourselves as kids. this makes some of us think that there is something wrong with ourselves, so we concoct compensatory drives, and that's the unrest we feel. constantly fighting back against a primal error in our psyches.
