Sarno's books and many members have illuminated us on the success and use of self-talk to get over TMS symptoms.

I would love to compile in one thread forms of self-talk that people have felt were most beneficial to them.

In my case: I can point to two types of self talk that have helped me.

1) Saying to myself, The pain I'm experiencing is a defense against undesired emotions such as BLANK (any crappy emotion or bad memory is inserted here depending on what's going on in my life).

2) Saying to myself, The pain is due to my autonomic nervous system reducing oxygen and blood flow to my body and not due to anything I'm doing physically.

3) I can handle the emotions, so I don't need this pain as a distraction anymore.

4) I'm healthy and there's nothing wrong with my body.

5) Thank you for trying to protect me from the painful emotions. I'm aware of the emotions. I don't need to be protected from them anymore.

No pain, no fear. No pain, no fear. No pain, no fear. (ad nauseum)

I used this little mantra in the beginning of my TMS work while carrying groceries up the steps, lifting anything over my head and then in the first few attempts back into working out (kickboxing and lifting weights over my head). It really helped me. I literally repeated it out loud over and over and over. Felt kind of silly at times, but I am thankful for doing it because I am back to all the activities that my "bulging disc" with "degenerative disc disease" kept me from doing for almost a year.

Came back to add one more. I memorized the little poem that's in Healing Back Pain and repeated that one over and over throughout the day.

I have 2 kinds of self talk.

One is where I address my inner child who is really me as a little girl (calling her by the pet name that my parents gave which very few people know) and I tell her that everything is Ok and that there is no need to feel frightened or helpless and that all the bad stuff is over and that we are now both in a very good place. I am very gentle when I do this

The other is when I just get angry at my unconscious in general and tell it that I'm onto it and to ***** off.

Great topic and some good stuff!
---

I will no longer obsess and worry about my pain and health problems.
---

I will uncover the repressed emotions and memories that cause me pain and impact my health.
I will recognize them and think about them whenever they occur.
I will understand them to the best of my ability, accept them, document them, and reflect on them from time to time.

I am *RECLAIMING* my life !!

I REFUSE to be intimidated!!

(I think these might have come directly from Dr Sarno or Dr Brady's books.)

Lately, when I start to experience gripping worry over a particular symptom:

No Fear
Don't get invested in it...
Don't yield to it...
Don't struggle to fight it off...
Just let it be there until it passes.
