I've been pretty fascinated this Spring playing soccer, because I felt a big groin tear one day as I was warming up. This may be very stupid, but I've stopped stretching before playing because I've read studies that it doesn't prevent injuries and might even cause them, and also because I see sports as being engulfed in an emotionally warped, self-punishing, repressive culture that hugely overvalues and emphasizes winning and, as a result, seems ripe for causing TMS maladies. I see muscle-tears as prime territory for TMS.

Anyway, I felt my groin tear that day as I kicked a ball around without stretching, :) , and I immediately just chalked it up to TMS. I went on kicking freely that practice, and didn't feel my groin "injury" since. And it's funny because groin tears used to really plague me when I played soccer. And I can so easily remember how much pressure I used to put on myself to "play to my potential" and always do the utmost to win. Interestingly, while I no longer seem to mind losing even close to as much as I used to, and while I now embrace my "poor/stupid" plays whereas in the past I used to punish myself for them, I seem to play much better, with more confidence and a more relaxed attitude, and to enjoy myself on the field, more than I ever did before.

Nice job. I've had similar experiences with skateboarding. I used to push myself all the time, and I had a bunch of little TMS "injuries" distracting me. We forget the point of having fun is having fun sometimes. So nice to relax and enjoy myself now. :)

Oh, and I also don't ever stretch for the same reasons you do. I do "warm up" to activity levels though. Like walking a bit and getting the blood flowing before running a few miles. I've seriously destroyed both of my knees before because of going from inactivity to activity too quick. I think.
