I am an old hand at TMS, have had it in lots of places, and have eventually overcome each of them (though they sometimes return), and I am suspicious of practically everything that happens in my body. But I am experiencing a new symptom that has me worried because it seems so serious and is so embarrassing. On occasion, while I am eating, I feel as if the food is not moving through my esophagus but is stuck halfway down. There is pretty bad pain like heartburn, and I feel as if I am going to vomit. It's very scary, especially when it happens in a restaurant or in someone's home. It's like a panic attack, but seems so real. I don't think it is an actual obstruction because it doesn't happen very often--I had an episode yesterday, and there was one four months previous to that. With an obstruction, I think it would happen often, or always.
I looked at my AMA book of symptoms last night (a TMS person's treasure trove of illnesses), and I came across nothing that would explain it--except for one interesting disease called a spasm of the esophagus. TMS came to mind immediately when I read that the cause of the spasm is unknown and there is no cure--just learn to live with it, the AMA says. Not all my episodes have seem connected to a specific event, but yesterday I was enraged at an occurrence at work, so I can easily see a connection.
Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

Yes, actually this is my most recent symptom. I just thought I was eating too fast, but it has happened a number of times--I can definitely relate the the feelings of panic.
I've been taking a lot of NSAIDs for a knee injury I had at the end of the summer, so I figured I just got irritated and/or it was a new TMS symptom. I'm hoping that if I don't give it too much attention it will go away for good (like you, it's intermittent).

Yes it's one of the things Sarno talks about. Globus Hystericus or something like that. I have had it hte last three nights and a couple times in the last few months...talked it away as being TMS B.S. and it left within a day. Do a search on this forum as I just posted about it not long ago. Note the word "Hystericus"....hysertical symptoms etc.

Thanks very much. As much as I have read this forum, I missed this topic. The comments from others were very helpful. And here I thought I had something unique!

I get this too at times. I have a hiatus hernia and thought it was from that, but I was taking my Aciphex for it. I started to realize I would get it after being anxious about my back going out, etc. The other day I got it because I was nervous about driving a long distance in a storm. But I had just finished reading Dr.Sarno and I talked it away. It actually was gone by the time I got to my destination. You should get your upper stomach checked just to make sure you don't have something serious. If that come back good, then you'll know for sure it was tension. |

Hi
I've been gone for months and months. I have had this "hiatal hernia" thing for years as a constant but gets-better-and-worse problem that impinges on my breathing. Years ago I had it checked out - or started to - through doctors. I soon saw I was entering a surgery and drugs free-for-all and backed off into the alternate world. A local chiropractor does specific adjustments for this, and it worked very well - got my first deep breaths for years. Then it seemed to stop working, even though I learned how to manually move it myself.
Anyone have any experience of resolving this as TMS?
I'm going to post this as a new thread too

I never heard of having a chiropractor fix a hiatus hernia? And, how do you manually fix it yourself? |

There's a way that you manually push the stomach or whatever has gone too far up, down and to the left. You basically press in just below the sternum, keep pushing down, turn left and hold. It's quite deep. If you do it right you may have gurgling and burping and feel quite different as though someone took their foot off your chest. At least I did. Until it didn't work.
You can google how to do this process, as I once saw it online.
Hope this helps. It's sometimes necessary for me to get some physical relief so I can do my TMS work.
xx
