One more question for everyone-- what does the Sarno philosophy say about caffiene? I drink a small amount of coffee-- one cup of 1/2 caf every day-- presumably not even enough to create an effect. But, of course, when I'm anxious I start going "ok, I need to totally detox off caffiene-- THAT's what's causing it."
Isn't this the equivalent of Sarno saying you shouldn't limit activity when you have back pain? Like, I should be able to eat or drink anything I want, right, because TMS is all in my mind?
Just wondering about similar experiences, and if anyone drinks/ doesn't drink caffiene. I will say I gave up both smoking and diet soda, and feel generally healthier. :) |

Seems like you don't take in an excess of caffeine, and Dr Sarno doesn't really mention caffeine as far as I know. I wouldn't worry about it. Kudos to getting rid of diet soda.....that aspartame is so terrible, the only reason its approved for use is because Rumsfeld strong armed the FDA into approving it many years ago even though it was clear how harmful it is. |

At that level of coffee consumption there are even allegedly some benefits! Don't worry about it. Some people do feel better if they don't drink caffeine and you could see if you are one, but really, think of all the people perfectly healthy drinking five or six cups! You have nothing to worry about.

Imcox-
When I saw Sarno in 1993 I specifically asked him about caffiene. I asked him if I needed to give up coffee to recover. He looked at me perplexed and said "of course not!"

There are so many contradictory studies on regarding coffee consumption and its impact on human health that it is almost impossible to make any kind of conclusive statement about the effects of coffee on one's body. The best advice any doctor can give a patient is all things in moderation. And certainly 2 cups a day is moderate.
Curiosity's post says it all and is the word from the good doctor himself. As far as TMS is concerned you do not have to give up coffee or anything else for that matter.
******* Sarno-ize it! Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." Also chapers 3, 4 and 5 in Dr. Scott Brady's "Pain Free For Life" are very important. |

Nothing really. Personally though, its my opinion that caffiene is just something your body doesnt really need. I gave it up 10 years ago and dont miss it. Going caffiene free can make your temperment more even throughout the day.
But, if you really enjoy it then have at it.
Take care, -Stryder |
