I know that Sarno talks about allergies as being TMS equivalents. Here's what I'm wondering about: Can a person's allergies be TMS when they are not even aware that they are in the presence of the offending allergen? Here's an example: A friend of mine is severely alleric to environmental stuff like dog and cat fur/dander, weeds, you name it. She's even allergic to wool sweaters. She told me that she's so allergic to pets that there have been times when someone she does not know will be in her home, someone who she's not aware has a pet and there's no tell-tale hairs on their clothes, and she will start sneezing and itching. She will ask the person, "do you have a pet" and they answer yes. So if she has no idea they have a dog or cat and starts sneezing shortly after they arrive, is this TMS?

Could be -- the reaction to the presence of the allergen is regulated by the immune system, which can detect the chemical, and isn't under conscious control or subject to conscious awareness.

We have to be careful though -- Sarno differentiates between adult-onset allergies and child onset, and if she's always been allergic that might just be how her immune system works.

As far as I know allergies is a sign of an overactive immune system, we all know that stress lowers immunity , affects hormones , disrupt the normal functionning of the body as a whole, according to some studies people with an allergy to roses will sneeze just by seing a picture of a rose in a magazine, so part of it has to be a conditioned response , once the body and the mind are back in balance one may have better control over them, I don't think that one has all the answers yet, I had a friend whose eyes would swell in the presence of a cat, however going into a strange house brought out her symptoms once , yet there were no cat in sight, the strange thing is that once she found out that a cat lived in that house she stopped sneezing, this still remains a mystery to me despite the fact that I could see how utterly miserable she was with her red and watery eyes, her constant nose dripping and sneezing, her symptoms were very real until she found a reason for them then they all cleared

There is also good allergy research information in the book Mind/Body Health: The Effects of Attitudes, Emotions and Relationships (got it at amazon.com). Shows how allergies can be caused by emotions that are disrupting normal body functions. Lots of studies you can read more about.
Very interesting stuff about how emotions can cause physical issues, thus showing many ailments can be TMS equivalents.
I remember how allergic I was to my former mother-in-law's cats, but only sometimes. Makes me wonder about my emotional state various times I visited her (hated my ex-husband!)
I also cannot recommend enough Candace Pert for the scientific side of mindbody research. Yes, she's done lab testing.
