I am getting discouraged with a flare up of TMS sciatica that I haven't had in 7 years. It has been going on for 3 months now and it is worse than when it started. Here is the frustrating part. Some days I am pain free and feeling like I have finally won and then I will have a bad day (like today). I am sick of this!!! I have had minor flare ups in other places before, but nothing like this. I have been reading, journaling etc. I am considering seeing a TMS Doc. Has anyone seen Dr. Gwordz?

Res, I sure don't see a need to see a TMS doc when you admit you have pain free days. It's TMS sure as shooting.
Now a TMS psychotherapist maybe. What's going on in your life just before this started?

Thanks for your reply. I have been in the process of changing jobs and even though it was the right move, I felt like I had to leave my old job. I start my new job in two weeks. I think my biggest doubts are because a chiro once told me that my SI joint was not stable and I think that I get doubts from that. I know that this is part of TMS also {the doubt).

I've had chiro's tell me the same thing. I've also had them tell me that one leg is shorter than the other. I've also had them tell me that spinal x-ray shows my disks are in bad shape. Chiros, by and large, are full of it, IMO. They want to find "subluxations" and they find them. They want you to come back forever. Do not trust what your chiro said!!! |

Res i had the same problem.When i started using TMS theory my pain was gone in about 2 weeks,but then it came back and was worse then before.I was frustrated as you,but i never stop fighting and now i can say that i am 95% better and still fighting until i kill this gremlin for good.

Thank you all for your responses. I am feeling more confident tonight. The thing that helps me be more confident is that the pain is so random. The pain will be low when I am sitting crosslegged on the floor, but bad when I am driving my car. How can this be an SI problem with these disparities?
I was thinking about it and I realize that I was still doing the things that let my body trick me. I was wearing the most supportive shoes I had, I was sleeping with something between my knees and not starting to exercise like have been wanting to.
As far as exercise, have you had more success with challenging the TMS with exercise or waiting until the pain is gone? |

Funny you should ask this. I had a flare up with my hip after spinning last week (an activity I think I associate with my piriformis "injury"). I tried to ignore it and get angry at it for a day and it kept irritating me. I decided if it hurt, it hurt and I wasn't going to panic. Two days later I was debating getting back on the spinning bike because I was afraid maybe I had irritated something and I shouldn't spin. I got back on the bike anyway and rode pretty hard. I had no pain after (a couple of twinges I ignored) and have felt fine since. It is very encouraging to "challenge" your pain and realize when you come out on the other side you aren't horribly injured like you once worried you would be. That's been a key for me in buying into the TMS theory. |

I think the worst thing you can do for yourself is to go to a non-TMS doctor as he / she will give you a non TMS diagnosis which amy hurt your confidence and do more harm than good. This latest onset is an indication that more psychological work needs to be done and that something is taking place in your life that is producing some really toxic emotions. You did not mention, however, what is taking place in your life. Dr. Sarno recommends that when there are frequent recurrences of symptoms a therapist - using insight psychology- may be necessary.
I will say also that some so called TMS docs are what I refer to as "TMS dabblers" in that they provide both traditional and TMS treatment modalities for TMS pain symptoms even though they know full well these traditional methods are placebos at best and nocebos at worst. They are, in essence, fence-setters.
******* Sarno-ize it! Read chapter 4 of Dr. Sarno's "The Divided Mind." Also chapers 3, 4 and 5 in Dr. Scott Brady's "Pain Free For Life" are very important. |
