Okay Everyone,
I am sorry if I am kind of starting my old thread, but let me explain something. Dr. Sarno, talks about osteoarthritis as a TMS equivelent. That does include the hand as well?
when I posted my first post TMS/Arthritis, please let me explain how this all started. Last year I got fired from my job, I've suffered from learning differences all my life, well last October I got a job at Costco in the bakery. I HATED IT and worked a lot of hours.
All of a sudden my RIGHT index finger joint next to my hand (I can't describe the joint but it is the bigest one that connects to the hand) SWOLLED UP...My sister in law diagnosed me as arthritis.
I was shocked and a little scared...The swelling has gone down, but the pain was still there...
Last week I had been playing guitar and I thank God that the hand that I play guitar with (left hand) had not been affected and that I could still play guitar. It's my life.
So, a couple of days ago I started doing a lot of blues bending and started to feel a little pain good playing hand (Left index joint just like the right one) and I was scared it was going to turn and swell like the right one and guess what? It has...
Now I have TWO, left and right index joints hurting in the same spot? How can this be? How can osteoarthritis hit two of the same exact joints.
Maybe this is pshcyosomatic as I have NEVER been diagnosed by a doctor...I am just assuming that I do have osteoarthis cause my parents have it...
Now that I have pain in the right joint I am so scared and have stopped playing my guitar. I am immaging myself having to deal with osteoarthritis and never playing again. I know this is negative thinking....
I am scared and sadden I really hope this is TMS...The funny thing is that about three months ago (I received and MRI) which showed that I had some arthritis in my back, but I have NO pain.
I am also under TONS of stress with getting the run around from Vocational Rehab and still unemployed...I am also suffering from OCD and Depression...
Could stress make my two index finger joint swell.
I am sorry to rant and start another thread on the same problem, but I don't know what to think....
Thanks Kalo

Kalo: My suggestion is to assume TMS and do the emotional work necessary to handle it as such. You mentioned a lot of stress and it could be all related.
Your focus on the physical is classic TMS distraction. The emotional stress you are under is also very much an indicator.
Can it cause or will it help swollen joints? I can't say. But doing the emotional work will be beneficial for you regardless and should help with the depression and OCD issues (also TMS) you are working through anyway. Commit to the process and let us know how you make out.

kalo,
Approximately 5 years ago I had something similar in my hand. I had x-rays taken, which showed mild osteoarthritis. After receiving the diagnosis the pain got worse. Finally, since I had seen Dr. Sarno years before, I decided to phone him and sent him a copy of the x-rays. He said that these were just normal degenerative changes, and that the pain was due to TMS. He also seemed irritated with the "over-pathologizing" of theseStructural changes. Within several days the pain was completely gone, and has not returned.
Take care, Curiosity

Thank you Curiosity18,
Your story seems encouraging. I really wish I could see a doctor who knew about TMS. Today there is so many articles out there on how the brain can produce pain and stuff.
Yet, most doctors fail to tak a history of what is going on in ones life. My doctor is very good as he never leaves any stone unturned, however, he doesn't believe that stress can cause different symptons.
I've not been to a doctor for a diagnosis. My I am sure that surfing the internet doesn't help my emotions either..
Thanks for the words of encouragement and thanks to everyone who has helped! |

Take heart Kalo,
I went down all of the arthritis paths myself when I had hand pain, and normal degenerative changes were found. Now I'm totally pain free, but in LOTS of stress, so don't fret.
Arthritis is something that comes on extremely slowly. One doesn't develop it quickly.
Once you've ruled out Rhuematoid arthritis, I think your totally in the clear.

Thanks h2oskier25,
I've made an appointment with the Doctor just so I don't drive myself insane. I don't know if he'll do an x-ray, but I'll keep everyone updated.
Thanks for all the replies on this thread and my previous one! |
