Hi. This is my first post. I have a close friend who seems to have clasic TMS. It was the knees for 3 years and now the butt. He will not read Sarno but would like to talk to someone who has been helped.
We are in the Phoenix area. If anyone would be willing to talk with him it might start him on the right path. Thx

What do you mean he won't read Sarno? You're giving him an option that costs less than $20 (to buy and read "Healing Back Pain" and "The Mindbody Prescription") that could conceivably heal him right away, or in several months for no additional cost. Everything else will be waste of time and money.

If he needs proof, tell him to read this forum, which actually makes redundant 1000s of forums and internet sites (all those useless ones on back pain, fibromyalgia, ulcers, headaches and so on).

If you are his close friend and he won't listen to you, then the chances of his listening to a stranger would be rather remote. You might try suggesting to him that he visit this forum to gather information as already recommended but if he is dead set on refusing to read the Sarno books it might just be that he is not suffering much pain with his present condition and is not desparate enough to open up his mind to a concept that might at the present moment seem a bit too strange to him. I posted a while ago about my best friend, (bright woman, reads everything) telling me she had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She knew what I was going through and that I had seen Sarno and was greatly helped. She would not read the book or talk about it. It was as if I was speaking a foreign language to her.

I backed off and listened to her tell me about her "fibroying out" and was sympathetic. Two months ago we were in Barnes and Noble. I bought the book and left it in her car without saying anything. When she told me I forgot a book in her car, I told her to read it. She did. It of course changed her life.

She's doing great. She keeps asking me why I didn't tell her about this sooned. I did. People only listen when they are ready.

Don't push. I bought the book for her 3 times before she read it. Just know that you're doing the right thing.

Good luck,
Polly

When I had persistent chest pain that would otherwise be diagnosed as costochondritis, I systematically did everything in my power to get rid of it like most of you TMSers (doctors, accupuncturists, yoga etc.) I had bought "Healing Back Pain" for my brother years ago (he had never read it) after hearing Howard Stern talk about how Dr. Sarno cured him back pain and OCD after 20 years of suffering with those conditions. Something led me to take that book with when I went to see an orthopedic doctor. I read a lot of it in the waiting room. It was a amazing that Dr. Sarno would predict exactly what would occur in the examination: I would have two herniated disks in my neck and one in my back, the doctor would give me anti-inflammatories and set up physical therapy. And ever since reading the book I have had many pain-free times, and even when I have pain I have far more control over it.

Maybe you could get Dr. Sarno's video tapes (the link to which is on this site). I love reading, but it seems we live in a world where MTV has rotted peoples' abilities concentrate. Possibly your friend would watch the videos instead of reading. Right now I'm waiting for Dr. Brady's TMS videos to arrive. I'd like to see his perspective on the condition (I've already read all three of Dr. Sarno's books, and also Dr. Sopher's book).

Hello Bill,

I would not feel comfortable talking to your friend as you suggest although there may be others on the forum who might be willing to do so. As an alternative you might consider carefully reading all previous 24 pages of postings on this site, extract all of the posts that are from folks who have achieved great improvement or cures through applying the Sarno concept, print them out and let him read them. All these testimonials should peek his interest and perhaps he will then read the books too. Just a thought. Good luck with it.
