I've read at least a half dozen times over the years that artificial sweetener can be bad news for certain people. Aspartame (NutraSweet) is the main culprit. It's a known excitotoxin that can do strange things to the brain, and it is in almost everything that is marketed as a diet product. Although unsubstantiated, it has been connected to MS-like symptoms that have cropped up in recent years. Sure, it has been approved by the FDA as being safe, but they approve a lot of things they probably shouldn't.

I'm one of those weirdos who doesn't like soda pop and can't tolerate coffee. I mostly stick with water and unsweetened tea, and I still have TMS. So probably there's no connection. Even so, knowing what I know about artificial sweeteners, if I did drink a lot of diet beverages, I would be wondering if I might be bringing out the worst in my excitotoxin-saturated brain. I think I would swear off for a few months to see if I notice an improvement.

even if there is no relation between aspartame/ other sweeteners and TMS, it can only help overall health by minimizing use of them

Hmmm, seems like it's a metaphor too for TMS distraction. Nutrasweet is a cheap, artificial flavor "distraction" from other more authentic flavors that overwhelms the taste buds with it's super sweetness.

Mindful eating would definitely involve getting rid of artificial sweetners.

I agree with JohnD. Aspertame, sucralose, caffeine, MSG, whatever are all crap and should be avoided as part of a plan to just be good to your body.

Caffeine is included in all kinds of things you would never imagine,,, like,,, Sunkist Orange Soda. -> Ingredients: Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup and/or sugar, citric acid, sodium benzoate (preservative), food starch-modified, natural flavors, caffeine, glycerol ester of wood rosin, ascorbic acid (preservative), yellow 6, red 40.

Take care, -Stryder

No doubt that refined sugar is not the best thing for you. As for aspartame, nobody really knows, but I am very skeptical of those reports. Beware any "studies" that blame unexplained symptoms on something we consume. Those symptoms may in fact be TMS.

As far as caffeine, humans have been consuming it for a long time, and there are no definitive studies that say it is bad for you. There are some studies that say it actually wards off certain disease. I personally don't see any problem with consuming a few cups of coffee per day.

By the way, ascorbic acid is vitamin C :)
