OK, Has anyone ever had neck/throat pain? Not the "sore throat" like strep, and no pain when swallowing food, but kind of a nagging pain when swallowing that may move around or feel more like strained neck tendons at times. Sometimes not there at all. A visit to the Dr. revealed nothing, so I'm thinking "Hello TMS, are you trying a new location?" |

I had a throat pain like that once. Thought I had some kind of hidden infection down there somewhere. Went to my doctor, an old, crochety, "cash only" GP, who looked at my throat and into my ears and said, "Nothing there. It's muscular." Which I had never even thought of.
But then I remembered that, a few days earlier, in the gym, I had done a new neck-strengthening exercise. Laid off that for a few days and the pain went away.
Good I didn't go to an HMO doctor. Practicing defensive medicine, he'd surely have wanted to order up a battery of expensive tests. |

Yes Texasrunner, its my main problem at the moment. I've just discovered TMS as a diagnoses of my condition and like you I've had my so-called "sore throat" checked out by a doctor and a consultant ENT surgeon and both came to a blank. My other problems are pains in left leg- hamstring, knee and calf, all of which doctors and physios can't sort out. Both symptoms came on at same time about two years ago of which I'm still learning about however, the main prob is my throat and reaccurring colds/flue and chest infections, which prevent me from pursueing my passion for running. Doctors have also drawn a blank on my colds etc, all tests say I'm alright! Would appreciate your view, bye the, the leg is better after 2 weeks TMS knowledge. |

Holy Moley...fooled again!!
wow...just when I thought I was in the clear! I've been having that periodically, and suspected TMS,but never had anybody else mention it.LOL!!
Thanks for posting this.
My docs have been giving me anti-biotics and saying I have eustacian tube infections.
Just now,as I'm writing this post it's all coming clear.....
The last time it happened was in September THE DAY AFTER I WAS NOTIFIED I WAS A FINALIST IN THE HANK WILLIAMS SONGWRITING COMPETITION AN HAD TO PERFORM AT A FESTIVAL OUT OF STATE!!!!!!
Get it??? I thought "Oh no,not now".....I was AFRAID..not of performing...I do that all the time....afraid because it was a compatition, and I'm a reeeeeeally competitive SOB.
All the way leading up to the competition I was checking my voice, taking steroids for the inflammation, and messing with antihistamines......HA
boy.....do I feel silly
Well....I guess that's one more thing I don't believe in.
Santa Claus the Easter Bunny Back Pain the tooth fairy neck pain The Chicago cubs
ahh the list just never ends.
THanK YOU!!!

i've never had this, but it sounds like a TMS equivalent to me. i've had some real strange TMS equivalents in the past few years. like i have this thing in my hip once in a while that feels like a tendon got loose and is squirming around under the skin. it doesn't even hurt. it's totally dumb.
last year a lost my job and had to go work at the family business, which just made me more miserable than you can imagine. during this time my low back pain stopped and i started to have this burning/stinging pain in both arms and hands. as soon as i landed a new job, it stopped completely.
TMS can be stupid, like a lazy worker who occassionally gets bored with his job and starts experimenting with other, more unusual tasks...just to make life a little more interesting. |

Not sure what you mean ... messages on this board are saved indefinitely. While it is uncommon to receive replies to old messages, in this case that's what we have. |

John UK- Yeah, my weird fake sore throat/swallowing symptoms eventually went away. It's a great location for TMS, because you're constantly reminded of it everytime you swallow. TMS likes those locations. Notice that it always chooses areas that are hard to ignore. By the way- my hamstring is doing great- no pain while running or sitting (after 8 years!) |

Well I thought it was kinda' interesting, that within 24 hours Gary and KennyV appear on the board after lengthly absences. There was a theory for awhile that they were the same person. |

Texasrunner, Good to hear that you are well for so long. I'm just new to the TMS theory but am trying to apply it. I would'nt be that bothered about my throat if I did'nt get the colds/flu symptoms, I associate them together. Did you get the colds etc or just sore throats? Bye the way, I've been reading Monte Hueftle's book "Get rid of pain in your butt", he is a Doctor that runs and suffered TMS for 20 years until he discovered Dr Sarno's work. Its available from runningpain.com, it provides a slightly different angle to Sarno and may be useful to other sufferers. |

No cold/flu symptoms, but some hoarseness, and throat clearing. By the way, Monte is not a doctor, just a new age runner who has given a lot of thought and study to the mind-body conection. |

I know, I know...I need to change my username on here, but don't know how...I'm wondering if what the doctor told me is "sore throat due to a seasonal allergy" (which I've never had in my 50-some years) is yet another TMS gremlin. I decided to treat it as such earlier this month, by journalling, reading, brain-talk, etc. and it vanished for close to 2 weeks...no change in exposure to pollen, grasses, etc...the sore throat, post-nasal drip and stuffy ears were back to normal. The very next day after emailing a friend that the TMS methods helped my throat so much, (and after posting about it on a TMS social-media page), the symptom returned! Arrrgh! Any advice? I'm continuing the journaling, reading, etc., but also am popping antihistimine to tide me over. Thanks! |
