Into my second reading of curing back pain I see where he says once the pain goes away then to resume all activity. Now is the pain suppose to just go away by reading the book. I am confused.
Thanks. |

Luv: For most people just reading the book is not enough. I read a few of his books several times, but more work was needed for me to be healed. For me it was reading the study guide (which is in The Divided Mind) daily for several weeks, and lots of writing about current and past issues that bothered me. Lots of feelings there that got out. I suggest reading the Treatment part again. I believe Dr. Sarno says once most of the pain is gone, to resume normal activity. It's usually a slow easing back into your normal activity.

Mizlorinj is correct. For most people just reading the book it is not enough. You have to allow the concepts presented in Dr Sarno's work time to sink in and the time this take varies from one person to another- there is no set time applicable for every single person. I suggest you read the psychology chapter over again and then think carefully how what is presented in the chapter applies to you. Keep a journal and focus in on some of the issues discussed in this chapter. Then read the treatment chapter and try to follow the advice given there. Try not to get discouraged when yiu do not see immediate results as this takes time and real effort, but you will succceed if you stick to the prescribed programme as have thousands of other people.

Dr. Sarno's books, like any good knowledge therapy program, are not designed for PASSIVE reading. They are instruction manuals with a series of activities all layed out for the patient to complete. If you simply read the words, the books will not be of much benefit. You have to read the MEANING in the words and APPLY the meaning to your individual life and pain circumstance. This is the way to get better. The books advise you to journal, think introspective and most of all RE-READ certain chapters over and over again. This repetition is very important for allowing the MEANING of the words to sink in, rather than just the words themselves. Being able to quote a chapter does not enact a cure. Applying the wisdom of a chapter does... My best to you, as always. - Sensei
