hey everyone, i've spent the last hour or so reading the posts on this site and its been making me feel a hellava lot better. I decided i probably have tms just over two weeks ago after a particularly frustrating visit to a tossa of a doctor who at least confirmed that i don't have any physical signs (inflammation) of the tendinitis/rsi i thought i had for the last 11 months (i've also ruled out the common rheumatic disorders through blood tests).
i found rachel's site by googling chronic pain http://podolsky.everybody.org/rsi/ and it really sunk home like a ton of bricks that my pain is psychosomatic. it was a great relief, and for a week my pain really eased, but then i started going back to working on the computer and teaching and i'm having trouble managing the pain and really feel i need to know more about tms and get together some good strategies for dealing with it. from what you've all posted it sounds like journalling and distraction and psychotherapy are all goers.
i ordered Sarno's The Mindbody Prescription from amazon, but i'm in porto alegre, brazil at the moment and amazon reckons it could take up to 10 weeks to get here and i really really dont feel like waiting that long. is anyone in this list in porto alegre, and if so do you have one of sarno's books i can read while i wait for mine to arrive?
cheers for any help you can give, and have a great easter/holiday!

Posted - 04/08/2007 : 07:06:46 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got the following alert this morning for: http://whyaudiobooks.blogspot.com/index.html
Article follows:
"Sunday, April 8, 2007 The Divided Mind Divided Mind, The: The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders (Abridged)
The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John E. Sarno’s long and successful career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer. While his earlier books dealt almost exclusively with musculoskeletal pain disorders, here Dr. Sarno address the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mindbody) disorders.
In Dr. Sarno’s view, the crucial interaction between the reasonable, rational, ethical, moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind is the basis for many mindbody disorders.
The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud’s crucial role as well as his failures. Most important, it describes the psychology of the human condition that is responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. Dr. Sarno believes that the failure of medicine’s practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mindbody disorders has produced public health and economic problems of major proportions in the United States. One of the most interesting and important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is the fact that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers.
Includes an interview with the author, by Joe McNeely, Audio Evolution.
AUTHOR BIO John E. Sarno, M.D. is Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University School of Medicine. He has been practicing medicine since 1950. Dr. Sarno is the acclaimed author of Mind Over Back Pain, the #1 New York Times bestseller Healing Back Pain, and the bestselling The Mindbody Prescription. Dr. Sarno lives in New York.
NARRATOR BIO Paul Hecht’s career in audiobooks spans dozens of titles and authors as varied as Ray Bradbury and Gore Vidal, Jack Finney and Thomas Mann. Most recently, he has delighted audiobook fans with his voice work for Alexander McCall Smith’s Portuguese Irregular Verbs and At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances. Paul has performed in Selected Shorts at Symphony Space and around the country every year since the show’s first season. His theatre work includes Stoppard’s Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead (Tony nomination 1968), The Invention of Love, 1776, Noises Off, and Pirandello's Henry IV (Obie award 1990).
