I live in Virginia Beach and am just becoming aware of TMS. I am starting to understand the issues BUT now where do I go to get the relief. Going to NYC to visit Dr. Sarno at least at this time is not an option. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi MuLLady, welcome.
This site lists TMS physicians and therapists around the country:
http://www.tarpityoga.com/directory.html
But, as to where to go to get "the relief," you won't need to travel very far. The healing begins inside you. TMS work is self-work, though it can sometimes help to see a psychotherapist to get "the work" started.
Have you read any of Sarno's books yet?

I am currently reading Divided Mind I have read the first 4 chapters. Its crazy when I started to explore all these things I instantly knew this was the issue I did get some relief from the back pain that I have had for the last 1.5 years BUT all my distractors came out in force sugar, caffiene, alcohol, tv... the more I looked inside the more I wanted to hide. Also I seem to attract events that distract me, I have not been in a fight in years and while attempting to break up a fight at a bar I got hit the hardest ever in my jaw which still is causing problems a week later. Most of the back pain went away oddly enough, the old switcharoo:):)
Although the greatest gift and this is so huge is that I have not obsessed about my x- girlfriend at all which for the past 5 1/2 long years I have been doing daily. I instantly saw this as a major distractor and it went away I can't tell you how awesome this is.
I just ordered Dr. Sarno's DVD and plan on finishing Divided Mind and then starting on the daily work.
Are there any other sources for work books that ask questions that direct towards potential problems areas? I did look at the directory link you suggested BUT the closest is DC, is there another source to find professionals that understand this?
Thanx for your input,
MuLLady

Hi--
Some have used Dr. Schechter's workbook (available at his website, http://www.mindbodymedicine.com/). It might be a good way to start addressing your emotions--it's basically journaling with guided/probing questions. There are a variety of ways to go abuot TMS "work," and you need to find what methods work best for you. I can sense your eagerness to get better now that you've realized your pain is due to TMS. But keep in mind that TMS work is a process, so it's usually best not to set time limits for your progress. This can often lead to more frustration when things aren't happening as fast as you'd like. (I was/am the same way.)
Hopefully some others will respond about possible TMS therapists nearer to your area. However, since this is not yet a mainstreem concept, MDs and therapists who know about it are few and far between. Sometimes you can find a local therapist (psychodynamic or insight-oriented) who would be open to working with you from a mindbody perspective. They may even be willing to read one of Sarno's books. You'd just need to ask around. Otherwise, there are some TMS therapists who do sessions over the phone. Don Dubin in LA is one of them, I believe.
good luck, ss |
