Du you belive in candida infections? (And getting better if you treat it with diet, pills etc.) A very "popular" diagnose these days. Or is it just TMS?

TMS - my yeast infections have totally stopped. I used to avoid sugar and wheat because I was obssessed with Candida. It is just an avoidance strategy |

I believe in Candida, and I'm living proof that cleaning up your diet can change your health dramatically.
Before I became aware of TMS, I cleaned up my diet. Removed sugar, wheat and starchy foods from my diet. Also, removed alcohol for several years, no milk products.
I was so amazed and empowered and how strong and healthy I got (The Dr's couldn't do that for me) that I began searching for empowerment about my pain, which led me finally to TMS theory.
Some of the benefits I received from cleaning up my diet have been: Clearer skin, my allergies went away almost completely, my skin had natural oil again, my digestion NEVER bothered me anymore, I was not constipated anymore, no more yeast infections, AND I haven't spent a day home sick with ANYTHING since 2002.
Now, to be clear, I don't practice this stringent diet, anymore. I have a drink a couple times a month, and I occasionally eat corn chips and such, but the bulk of my diet is not longer sugary starchy food.
All of these people that say ALL of their digestive issues are TMS, I have to disagree at least in part.
You can't eat Twinkies and potato chips all day long and be healthy, I don't care how much you believe it's Mind/Body. You are what you eat.
If you're truly going to battle Candida, don't waste your money on all the candida cleansing stuff at the health food stores. I feel you have to starve them out, and you have to be a little bit patient about that.

Beth |

AMEN SISTER!! I agree with you 100%. Our bodies were not made to ingest preservatives and food "products".
(I know I didn't really answer your question Kajsa, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what candida infection is?) |

Beth, Very interesting - I am really struggling between intolerances to all grains and sugars for me being TMS or just that my body doesn't like them. When I avoid all grains, sugars, dairy, coffee etc. my skin is amazing and I have loads of energy and feel great. I used to do a blood type diet and felt amazing - especially my skin was so clear. Dr. Sarno told me this was totally TMS and that everyone can eat everything - obviously not junk food. I am not sure still what to think Suz |

When I've heard of people who have Candida, they almost always have other TMS symptoms too. My mom has the whole spectrum. I went through a period where I had "yeast infection" symptoms but was told I had no infection! It went away when I changed my stress level.
So it's hard for me to believe it's not TMS.

I have to agree with you armchair - I find that my yeast infection symptoms have gone away. I used to worry about eating fruit so I decided to ignore all symptoms adn keep eating it - after a while, the bloating went down and the symptoms stopped. This just has to be TMS
I will say though that I have given up coffee for the last week and my skin is glowing - no under eye circles - hmm. Could this still be my brain making me think I can't have coffee? |

Dr. Sarno told me that adjusting the diet is a very very powerful placebo - many of the TMS equivalents will respond to this for a while
Normally though - the avoidance of foods gets more and more complicated and people have to keep taking foods out of their diet. The brain needs new distractions |

What an interesting idea -- food as placebo! There are people who swear by a low-carb diet for acid reflux. In fact, a microbiologist recently wrote a book about the low-carb "cure." Could this be a placebo effect? I THINK it helped me, but maybe because, miracle of miracles, I eliminated sugar for a few months, and that made me a lot calmer. Too much sugar makes me cross as a bear.
Many people on the GERD (reflux) forums speak about having to switch from one drug to another after a few months. Another example of the brain seeking a new distraction???
And speaking of sugar, could this addiction possibly be part of TMS? It is a powerful drug, one I find almost impossible to quit.
As for candida -- I've done the "candida cleanse," the probiotics, the elimination diets, even the prescription route. I still don't know what to believe. |

I agree with Beth when she says " you are what you eat" sugar , white flour and junk food are completely deprived of vitamins, and nutritive values, they will also lessen your appetite for better food. A bad diet lowers immnunity, reduces your energy level and bring on all kinds of problems. I once read that sugar alone will lower your immune system for hours after ingestion .I suffered from yeast infections for years until I removed sugar from my diet,so I am totally convinced that it works! good luck to you, it may not be easy at first but after a while I found that the craving for sweets went away, also I would advise you to stay away from diet sodas, according to the research they also interfere with blood sugar levels. Thanks Michelle and Miche for the validation.
Really, I wouldn't say it if I didn't believe it. I control my TMS VERY effectively, and when I have a cocktail or two, I'm not obsessing about my immune system. Yet, after a few months of partying on weekends, I start to not feel myself, so I go back to eliminating the alcohol.
After a couple of weeks, I'm fixed right up again. It's a happy balance I've found between physical health and mental health.
Regarding the candida, I'd like to say that initially you have to be firm and consistent about avoiding sugar, flour, white rice, starchy foods, alcohol, all dairy products, all sweeteners, etc.
After you've done that a while, you'll find that you're able to tolerate a little of that kind of stuff much better. It's like they said about the immune system. Once it's back to strong, you can cheat a lot more (and I'm sorry to say, I do sometimes ).
Regards,
Beth |

Beth,
A few months ago, I would have agreed with you. But something very strange has happened - I decided to totally ignore the Yeast infection issue -and just eat whatever. I categorically could not eat fruit - If I did, I started to get bloating, gas and discomfort - fogginess, bad skin and the beginning of a yeast infection. Well - to my suprise, my body did not do this - it started to and I just laughed. Suddenly, everything stopped. I have stopped reacting to fruit. Why is that? My body, after all, is just the same. I am absolutely convinced that the body will give you yeast infectons if you think it will. I agree that eating junk food just isn't smart - feel tired and get fat.
However, Sarno is convinced that yeast infections are just another distraction - it keeps us focused and there is the extra focus of following a restrictive diet. |

Great topic...Sugar is a killer...Incredibly bad for the system and the mind..I feel 100 percent different when i have been off of it for awhile...not to mention look better too...I use food as a distraction from emotions...same thing as TMS but eating right is essential to overall health... |

Hello everyone. I am a sugaraholic. I have been 'sober' for 53 days. Meaning I haven't had a single sugar snack nor dessert. My husband was on the net looking for help with his tinnitis. He found Dr. Charlie Smithdeal. I don't know if we are allowed to post web sites. If you are interested, you can e-mail me. Anyway, Dr. Charlie helps you help yourself much like Dr. Sarno. Long story short I had him help me take my sugar addiction away. He did on the first phone session. He also took my fear of Large spiders away the very first thing to show me how fast I could correct something. I am a great believer in Dr. Atkins. I would only have a sugar snack on Fri. Then after a year or two it was Fri. Sat and Sun. Then I was back to my old ways. I was finally ready to get rid of sugar once and for all.
Before I started the Dr. Atkins diet for life, which for me was really just cutting way back on sugar and carbs, I had my yearly blood test. My Trigl. was 322. Two months after no sugar my trigl. was 153. The next year, 94. The Dr. thought something was wrong. Needed another blood test. The next year it was 80. He believes me now when I tell him all I did was stop eating sugar. This year's trigl. should be really good since I have stopped for good. I know there is sugar in all processed food. I am just cutting out the desserts and candy I can control.
Also another wonderful book to read about sugar addition is "Potatoes-Not prozac." Explains why some people like me are sugar sensitive and can't eat just one. I could never eat on cup cake. I would eat 12. Luckily I have high metabolism and didn't get too fat. I did lose 10lbs and have kept it off.
I don't want to make this too long. I love talking about the no sugar life style! Cari
