Has anyone had this experience? For years I won't go into Target stores because the minute I stepped in there I'd have pain. Now I don't have a problem 95% of the time in Target. Its crazy I used to think it was tile floor but now I'm convinced it was conditioning. Another situation is driving, everytime I would drive my wifes HOnda Civic I'd have pain now I don't. (a good thing with the price of gas) I'll have pain wearing certain shoes. My pain totally goes when I go barefoot. I' been staying away form church because whenever I go I experience pain. When I leave church it leaves. Has anyone had similar experiences. A sure sign of conditioning and TMS??? |

Yes, driving the car would bring on painful lower back and neck issues. Never failed. Then I got wise to TMS and have not had this since, so about fifteen months now. |

Hi Chicago,
I have had TMS experiences at synagogue. Every Yom Kipur, at exactly 5 p.m., after fasting all day, I get a head-ache. It gives me an excuse to leave and eat--TMS conditioning, happens just like clock-work.
Personally I like Target, but it pissed me off that they banned the Salvation Army bell-ringer at Christmas, maybe your sub-conscious is protesting their lame action.
Hondas suck. The last two fatals I heard about involved Hondas. Get a Jeep and you will look forward to driving again--Jeeps eat Hondas. |

Hi tennis Tom,
As far as the Honda goes I drive it as little as possible. I would'nt want to be in it in a serious accident, but you can't beat the reliability. Anyway I've gotten over my pain driving small cars. I just told myself I will not have pain driving and sure enough I rarely have pain driving. In fact we just got back from a long road trip. It's amazing the power of suggestion. |

Any other examples of conditioning? The reason I ask is that I have stayed away from church. I went last night (1st time in 3 months) for a play my daughter was in and bang I started to have burning pain. I was doing really well all day and no sooner did I hop in the car to go to church the burning started. I know what its all about but never-the-less I feel very down.(TMS) Lately I've been up and down as far as I feel pain wise and emotionally. I don't know maybe thats a sign of recovery. Any feedback would be appreciated. |

Hmm this is a very intreseting thread. I have been wanting to start going back to a church but weary of doing so at the same time. I thought about the church down the road where my father's side of the family goes but the uncle I have issues with goes there. If he didn't attend there then I probably would try it out. I was told her was there last Sunday and someone told him that I might be there that day. When I was told about the uncle I started hurting worse (wouldn't have noticed this prior to learning about TMS but I am trying to be more observant now), so I KNOW that I am not as over the uncle as I thought and that he is indeed a trigger.

Ali Cat,
Thanks for responding. I to wouldn't have thought too much about the link of attending church and pain several years ago. Its something how TMS forces one to look at all possible issues. I'll have to think about this awhile to uncover what my issues might be. |

Chicago, I had a similiar experience in synagogue yesterday...and certainly driving there because I cannot turn my head to see who is coming, left and right..Had to have my roomie be my eyes, but at least i feel better when i am behind the wheel cuz i know i'll take the bumps carefully and the starts and stops..Once I go to the service, I was ok at first..but it is a very long service (over 2 hours) so as it went on the pain got worse..Then the mic made this terrible sudden feedback sound when the rabbi was talking and i jumped thru my skin and tightened my neck up more..Everyone prayed for me and that definitely helped..But...I was standing in one place for longer then normal, locking my knees and lo and behold today my knee hurts..My TMS is severe in my neck right now for the past 5 weeks...The secondary places are my knee and back...I am managing to keep the back and knee pain at bay thru using TMS techniques of self talk, etc..But the neck is very upsetting and frightening still..As i am uncovering more from my unconscious thru therapy seems it is almost getting worse! I've been told that is common and temporary...I wish all of us on here would just HEAL for good...I feel for all of us, this is a very tough disorder...BTW, I go to synagogue and to church...and both places produce the same results, good and bad...neck/back wise...conditioning is powerful..Fred Amir in his book says we have to become more powerful then our subconscious minds! Good luck... |

That's a good thought- "more powerful than our subconsious mind." I'll try and keep that in my thoughts whenever pain strikes. Thanks! |

My visit with Sarno he told me conditioning is bigger then a lot of people think and that is one of my biggest problems. certain situations and positions always bring on the sharp butt and sometimes leg pain.
I suffered from sciatica and butt pain and was diagnosed by Dr. Sarno with TMS for some of you who might not know me and some inspiration here for people having pain sitting in cars.
THE PAIN WILL GO AWAY!!! i sat in the car straight for 7 and 1/2 hours this weekend back and forth and im about to do it again wednesday! NO PAIN PEOPLE! 100% no pain.
this is coming from someone who suffered from pain 24/7 in a car who never thought EVER it would go away.
and sure enough. It did. |

Jena,
That's great. I'm glad you overcame the conditioning. The best thing about conquering the conditioning is getting rid of the fear. I have overcome conditioning in some areas but continue to have pain when doing certain activities I think because of the fear. It helps hearing your story. |

I'm fighting the conditioning too, more than the TMS pain. I'm fine while at home, doing what I want, moving around, and I get to work and sit and before you know it, I can barely move I'm so stiff. My job is absolutely the culprit, nothing physical. I followed an attorney to this firm who told the partners I was a paralegal, although I don't have the degree but have 20 years of experience as a legal assistant. It's 6 years later and it's been nothing but hell trying to be accepted by all the other attorneys and the women in this office. I feel like I'm hated the minute I walk in here. To top it off, I believe the attorney I followed has become resentful that he has to constantly stand up for my rights.
I believe I need to get busy and journal about this one. |

I find that whenever I'm taken out of my comfort zone I am at risk of developing painful symtoms. I too find that work puts me in more difficult situations than being at home. I guess the thing to do is to be aware of the triggers and keep plugging away at the underlying thoughts. |

More examples of conditioning ;
When you hear water tinkling and it makes you have to tinkle.
When you can't tinkle and you flush the urinal to help make it happen.
When you drink coffee in the morning and it makes you have to go. This is called being a coffee responder.
The plastic rose experiement, where they set up a lab experiment studying allergies. First they exposed the patients to real roses and they would sneeze--then they substituted plastic roses and they still sneezed.
I think conditioning is just another word for bad habits. |
