Does anyone get knots in there back in the same places all the time.
My spots are my mid back and calves. I notice when I am not stressed mentally I don't have them anymore.

I have a nice-size lump in my mid-back right now. Doesn't hurt unless I press on it. Think a good massage would work it out?

If you think this then you are not thinking TMS.

I have knots in my calves , but have never really understood their origin. I think the knots are a response to tension , but can be made worse by exercise if the tension is not released. I have had massage " work them out " , but , of course they return because they are psychologically based....... I can't remember Sarno directly addressing them.

Muscle knots are also known as trigger points. I used the book The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook and professional TrP therapy as my method of choice prior to encountering Sarno's method. They are very common and can cause widespread pain, even in areas remote from the knots themselves. I was diagnosed as having trigger points in my neck muscles that were "causing" RSI in my forearms. They can be produced by a true injury (eg sprain), but IMO they are usually both created and used by the brain for pain purposes. Even if they come from an injury it may only be that the injury was a TMS trigger. I think they are what Sarno is pressing on when he finds tenderness in TMS patients, so in that sense he may mention them, but it is true that he doesn't really address them.

It is possible and frequent for them to be present without causing any pain (latent) -- all mine are still present but since my Sarno work they "activate" much less. Massage, especially localized massage, will help their state, but if TMS is the problem, it will not be able to make them go away, and it will tend to act as a distraction from the method.

This is a common point of contention on this board, but I say that if massage feels good, do it. That is, as long as you are not depending on that as a treatment for the underlying problem of TMS...
