i have been pain free for a long time now... many of u know who i am... im one of dr. sarnos patients....
but im a little worried ive been doing great! 100% pain free for a while a few months. Until this morning. Sarno told me my brain is conditioned to evperience acute painful attacks in certain laying down positions. every single time i lay down in the specific position it never fails my back goes into EXTREMEEEE pain and i get nervous and scared i even start to sweat. Why wont it just let this one last thing go? its a spasm that starts in my buttocks and if it actually "goes out" it will effect my entire left leg. can anyone relate to this?
i need advice. |

Hi Jena:
Everyone on the board can relate to this, but with differing symptoms and circumstances. this one thing won't let go because the distraction is working, but I suspect you really know that. Conditioning is the hardest thing to overcome.
I went to the drive in theatre this April and experienced back pain again (even though I can lift heavy objects without pain) because the last time I went to the drive-in my back bothered me. So what did I do? I told myself this was a result of a brain-conditioned pattern of pain and I didn't let anxiety get the better of me. When I ignored the pain and relaxed, it lessened and eventually went away and I enjoyed the movie with my wife.
The only thing you can do is the same old same old. YOu already know it. You must continue to do the activity that causes pain while you continue your TMS therapy routine. When the pain comes, go through the routine until you convince your brain that you know the score. good luck!

I haven't had significant TMS back pain in quite a while, but the same thing happens to me from time to time if I lie flat on my back. Very sharp pain.
The key is: don't let it make you nervous. It's just a little pain! For me, just a slight change in my position usually makes it go away and that's that. Some things are physical, and a little pain here and there is normal. It's funny that sometimes when I feel it I think "God I'm glad I know about this TMS thing, or this pain would freak me out!"
You're doing great, so now you have to learn to stop "waiting for the other shoe to drop", so to speak. Remember, it's the fear, not the pain, that is the key to TMS. |

Thank you for your encouragement and responces. This pain isnt anything i can overcome when it happens. I cant just roll into another position and it'll go away. Let me rephrase that. If my back doesn't "Go out" then i can move into another positon and it will be okay but if my back does go out im doomed. The pain gets so bad ive passed out for a few minutes. its in my buttocks and down my leg the pain is different then sciatic pain i cant even explain it and its like every muscle and nerve in that area and in my leg cant function at all. i know its my brain but what i dont understand is i can get rid of any pain but this one. I mean it really makes me believe sometimes that something is wrong with my tailbone because when i apply pressure to it it just collapses with pain. I cant even move without crying. i just hope one day this will 100% go away like my sciatic pain has. I know many people have different pains and can relate but this pain is unbareable it feels like a pulling then after that who knows what happens but the pain. thank u for listening. |

The key here is you are beginning to believe it may actually be structural so your brain is having a field day with this. You had success from this before and you can again. You need to go back to the old days and reprogram the brain that you know this is oxygen deprivation and you are not going to give in to it. |
