I really do consider myself 100% cured by Sarno of all my back pain. I get twinges here and there and I just laugh them off - and they go. It is the most wonderful freedom in the world not to be in pain. I think I finally conquered it when I started running - now successfully with no pain.

My question is: I am struggling with my diet. I have been convinced in the past by many naturopathic doctors that I have a Candida problem in my gut and should avoid all sugars etc. After Sarno helped me so much with my back, I decided to forget about the special diets I was on and just eat everything - well, I didn't really feel too well and continued not to feel too well.

When I eat fruit or carbohydrates, I put on weight immediately and I become very very bloated. I don't know if this is now a conditioned response or very real food intolerances. I also still have constipation. I have been a very very big fan of Dr Peter D'Adamo and his blood type diet and I have sort of drifted back to doing it again.

It is so hard to know what symptoms are caused by the mind and what are really valid.

I have a definite candida imbalance and it comes out in the form of chronic yeast infections. There's no good reason for it and I do feel it's a TMS equavilent. I have yet to really get good control of it so I don't have any suggestions, just wanted to post a reply that it's not so uncommon. I don't think mine is food related. I believe it's stress/anxiety of some type.

Why not start with very small amounts and build up slowly?

Hilary,
Great suggestion! - that makes sense. After all, I started running in small amounts until my body stopped reacting. I will do the same with fruit. I had to ease back into exercise - will do the same with food

Let me know how that goes. I cleaned up my diet in late 2001 and haven't been sick with a Cold or Flu since Nov, 2002. I'm not even that rigorous about sticking to it!

It took a while, but I couldn't believe the difference. I went from getting sick 4 to 5 times a year, and ALWAYS catching what was going around at the office, to never being sick. It still amazes me.

I believe there are other factors, but I will never be able to eat a diet rich in carbohydrates and sugar again, I fear.

I have to say, I've been slow to accept this as a TMS equivalent.

Look, you have to pick your battles. If you feel better on a particular diet and you don't mind adhering to it, who cares if it's placebo effect or not?

If adhering to the diet causes a lot of stress, then it might be worth exploring the TMS concept more in terms of these issues, but if not--forget it!

Dr Ziggles,
Good point. My inability to eat sugar in any form - even as a fruit and also to eat carbohydrates is a tough one. It is quite restrictive. I feel remarkably better off all breads and pastas and simple sugars - but fruit? It doesn't seem right.

Beth,
Out of interest - how did you end up adjusting your diet? Did you just discover that carbs and sugars don't agree with you? Do you eat fruit?

I believe that diet acts as a very very poweful placebo. I have had a brief chat with Sarno about this who thinks the same.

I believe that if one thinks one is going to react to a food, one will - just straight forward conditioning. It is the same concept as conditioned response to sitting/running etc.

I think it probably takes baby steps. I am willing to bully through the symptoms because I really want to eat fruit - grains etc. - well, I don't really care - they just make me fat!

Hey Suz,

I have had the same problems with TMS food reactions. I posted earlier (maybe Jan?) that I was reacting terribly to foods I had been diagnosed as "intolerant to". Wheat, sugar, dairy were the main culprits. I decided that all this was TMS nonsense and started eating whatever I wanted. I went through a terrible period where I still had the reactions, especially to milk.

I decided I was just going to live with the discomfort because I wanted to eat "normally". I still try to avoid sugar (refined only) just because I'm not much of a sweet-tooth and I don't need the empty calories, but I don't deprive myself.

Well I've discovered in the last few weeks that I am not reacting anymore. It was a gradual thing. And probably related to the fact that my allergies and asthma have never been worse (love how that TMS moves around!)

So my suggestion is just wait it out. Cut back on the worst offenders and gradually introduce them. Eventually the conditioned response of reacting to the food will go away. Just be on the look out for new, unrelated symptoms. That will be your sign that you can eat anything again! And that you must start to work on the next tms manifestation.... sigh...
