I'm a long-time TMS sufferer that is getting worse, not better. I saw Sarno in October, 2002 and he confirmed it and agreed I did not appear to have any deep-seated issues, just a lot of rage & anxiety related to my divorce. I have a classic TMS personality, generate a lot of day-to-day anger and anxiety and cannot really feel my emotions too well. I've tried everything and read almost every book and have made some progress but nothing sticks. Monte's techniques have helped some. My back (and severe foot pain) is making my life unbearable.
I see a therapist (CBT) twice a week but have made little headway. I haven't called Sarno but I'm sure he'd say i'm ready for psychotherapy. I know of, and have spoken with a TMS trained psychotherapist in Manhattan but he wants $150 or more an hour, which I cannot afford.
Question: would a run-of-the mill psychotherapist (Freudian) be able to help me uncover my repressed emotions? My health plan is good and Manhattan is loaded with psychotherapists. What exactly is a "TMS trained psychotherapist".
Thanks for any help or insights. |

trunorth. I saw Doctor Sarno in 1993 and did not live in New York/New Jersey. I believe he saw out-of-state patients at that time. He recommended that I find a psychodynamically oriented therapist in my Midwest city. Before my first visit I sent her a copy of HBP, and requested that she become familiar with it before our first session. She agreed to do so, and quickly grasped Sarno's work. Psychodynamic therapists are trained in Freudian theory, and are very familiar with repression, narcissistic rage and the unconscious mind. I'm not surprised that the CBT therapist hasn't been helpful with your TMS. They primarily deal with conscious thoughts and beliefs, which have little impact on TMS. They can, however be useful with stress management and relaxation strategies. At least, this has been my experience. Hang in there!

P.S. Don't any of the TMS therapists in the area take insurance?

trunorth, I forgot your last question! A TMS therapist is a psychodynamically oriented therapist who is very familiar with Sarno's work and practices from this framework when treating TMS clients.
