First of all I know I have TMS.I just ran a half marathon a week ago today .I rested 4 days and went out for an easy walk/jog of 2 miles. At about the mile mark I started to get a pain on the outsde of my knee(I beleive an injury similiar to iliotibial band syndrome). Then I tried the second day it was worse! It does not hurt at all when I sit or walk, just when I run. Sarno says in HBP that tendons/ligaments are the type of tissue that is involved in TMS.Should I keep trying to run (it gets painful)or should I rest, ice, compression and elevation? Thanks for your comments. |

I think that what you are going through is the hardest thing to discern. injury v. tms. i am a runner and have had hamstring pain for months and months. i tried PT, laying off for 6 weeks. An "injury" should have healed - this has been going on since March. I started back running trying to use Sarno principles but it is so difficult. Because as a runner - it is definitely hard on your body. Have you tried going to www.runningpain.com. It is devoted to tms principles but basically for runners.
I am in thje situation where I don't know what to do. Run or nor. I run and it hurts. I don't run and it hurts. I have done the treatments and I just wonder if perhaps there are some other treatments out there.
I feel for you. |

Nobody can tell you for sure whats going on in your body. But if it was a real physical injury, would it really just act up on the mile mark or whenever it does or would it hurt all the time? |

The fact that you ran a marathon with no injury, and then an "easy walk/jog" caused knee pain, makes it likely that it is TMS, no? It is also interesting that you would use terms like "iliotibial band syndrome" if you are familiar with TMS, since those kind of medical diagnoses should be out of your mind.
Say for the sake of argument that it is an injury. So give it some rest. Don't run for a few days and see how it feels. I wouldn't use ice, compression, or elevation because that is thinking physical. If you believe it is an injury, your mind will perpetuate TMS at that spot for sure. Which brings me to runnerguy.
Hamstring pain for "months and months" is TMS. Hamstring injuries heal within 2 months. You too, are thinking physical -- running is "hard on your body."
You say you have "done the treatments." What are you referring to? The fact that you "tried PT" means you don't really believe it is TMS.
I think in both these cases, there is significant doubt that the pain is TMS, and significant belief that the pain may be physical. Visualize your brain licking its chops and laughing in a sinister way. You are giving it the perfect opportunity to perpetuate TMS. |

Thanks Dave. It is a huge struggle. When I said I did the treatments - I meant I did 8 sessions of PT, chiropractic, ART. Rested for 8+ weeks. Those are the physical treatments.
I have been seeing a counselor and we are working on the "emotional" part. I have made the decision to go back to running. My hope is to be able to have the pain go away while working on the emotional and continuing to run. Tough tough goal.
I think in my case it all stems from self-esteem. Working out makes me feel good. Though I know that no one or a "thing" can do that -that is my struggle.
Thanks

Thanks John and Dave for your comments.I was actually thinking the same as both of you but wanted to get some opinions. The pain in my knee was like someone stabbing you with a knife,I was not able to run thru the pain as I have before with my back tightening up.I am going to take a few days off, then start back on my running schedule.I am not going to let TMS stop me from doing something I enjoy.I appreciate the help. |
