Yesterday I lifted something not too heavy and all of a sudden I felt this pull/twitching feeling/strain in my lower back right above my buttocks (in the center). It's so painful it's making me walk hunced over, because it hurts when I stand straight or lie down

I tried doing some back exercises but it's not helping. I've also taken a muscle relaxer & Percocet, but that area is still sore/stiff.

I wnt back to Dr. Sarno's book and repeated the mantra's, I even went to do cardio this morning (slow walking on treadmill), but the stiffness is still here.

I'm trying to follow Sarno's advice, but in the interim is there anything I can do to help alleviate the pain? He mentions the pain is from mild oxygen deprivation. So will a heating pad help or do I just keep popping pills???

Please help, because I don't want to crack & go to the chiropractor.

There is such a thing as a strained muscle. Just rest and put ice/heat on it and be assured that it WILL heal. It is when the pain goes on and on for many weeks or months that it could possibly be TMS.. give it a week or so. That is what I would do...

Thanks for the tip. So I shouldn't do exercies/cardio? I thought laying around is what the book was against

The thing is exactly this same time last year I got this same pain & it went on for 4 months, decreasing in time (including seeing chiropractor & physical Therapist). After those 4 months I read the book and the back pain went away.

Just recently I got tendonitis in my left shoulder & bursitis developed in my left hip. Tendonitis is gone, but just had an MRI on l. hip, since coritisone shots & pills didn't help. Orthopedist asked what I've been doing diff. at the gym and I told him I started yoga, so he told me to stop doing yoga. Maybe my stances were off!

When I think about what happens in my life during this time, it is that I'm always preparing to take 2wks off from my job and just stay home (last 2weeks in Dec.) I'm confused is this my stressor & why?

I would not do any back excercises. Doing those only makes you concentrate on the physical aspect when your problem lies in the mental/emotional aspect.

Also going to the chiropracter will make you think the pain is physical in nature.

I suffered from back pain and still get a flare up here and there. I learned this tip from another Sarno patient a while ago. When my back hurts, I say "It's only TMS, work through it." This means that instead of hunching over, I stand and instead of laying down I move around and go about my day. This is very tough because the pain can be excruciating. But once I start working through everything, the pain subsides. It's just a matter of working through the pain and not feeding into by using a heating pad or going to a chiropractor.

So my point is, as hard and as painful as it will be, do your best to go about your normal day. And remember the cause of your pain is NOT physical.

Sometimes going through the mantras and journaling can leave you sitting still or laying down and that's what I feel feeds the TMS. Besides, who wants to think that much anyway? Actions speak louder than words.

I hope this helps.

You should only do excercises or cardio if you're doing them to look good and stay healthy. You should not do excercises as a way to combat your pain. If you do that, you're believing that the cause of your pain is phyisical and not mental.

I would do Yoga if you find it enjoyable. Once you stop doing the things you like, it feeds the TMS. I've spoken to many patients who became discouraged because the pain made them stop the physical hobbies they enjoyed like tennis, running and bike riding. This could lead to depression because you stop doing the things you like to do. And that is no way to live.
