Hey all,
I am in the middle of a terrible sciatic flare up - have had it now for 3 days. I am a bit mystified as it has been a couple of months since I had one. I read Sarno's book all day yesterday and journalled last night. I also read "To be or not to be pain free" - can't remember author - but he worked with Sarno. It was a very good, simpler version of Sarno's work. Sarno gave me the book.
I stopped psychotherapy back in August when I ended things with my fiance and my pain went away totally. I thought I was fine. I have had a few minor flares but nothing like this recent one. The recent flares I have had have always been connected to wondering if I should go back to my fiance or not. As soon as I decided not to, the pain stopped. I really thought this was the key to me being pain free.
Now I am not so sure.
I guess my brain is not giving up on its TMS diversion strategy. I just don't understand why. I had 5 months of psychotherapy - longer than most. Someone said that Don Dubin recommended 15 sessions maximum. I have been working at Sarno's "cure" for a year and a half now.
I guess I am very frustrated. I stopped the reading and journalling since August. I had this TMS pain for 12 years so maybe I just need to work a bit longer. I don't get why some people get better in 6 weeks.
This is very difficult. I didn't like therapy at all. I liked the doctor but I found that I ended up hating my parents - especially my mother. This is not productive or helpful in life and I don't want to feel this way about my family.
I would appreciate any advice you guys have on this. Have any of you found it has been a long journey to get well?
Thanks
Suz

I started working with my therapist in February, and saw her every week until June. Then my husband and I started going together and have seen her almost every week since late June, and continue to see her. Occasionally I will see her on my own as well. I wouldn't put a number on how many sessions you "need". If you have a good therapist, maybe 1 or 2 sessions may be just what you need right now.

Good luck, I hope your pain decreases quickly!

Michele,
How are your symptoms? Have they subsided/stopped since doing the therapy? Is it the Freudian psychology that Sarno recommends?
