So,any of you see that Documentary "Dogtown and Z-boys" ?? I think they just turned it into a feature film called "Lords of Dogtown" Anyways...that was the the CULT-ure I grew up in.When I was a kid growing up in So. Cal,I had the ULTIMA THULE job for a 12/13 year old...I worked for a skateboard distributor!('77-'80) It was a rite of passage to know how to skate, and where you stood in the neighborhood pecking order had a lot to do with how well you could skate a pool.....these modern day 'urban assault' skaters and their little street tricks were for sissies...you had to ride pools,ditches,ramps...getting 8-15 feet up a wall was waaaaaaay cooler than doing a handstand. Anyways...when I was in my early twenties I 'retired' from skating...I had my own 12-14' deep pool to skate by myself, but I was having 'shin splints'(TMS) and 'shoulder problems'(TMS) and I had fallen head first in the big pool at the Del mar skate ranch. The left side of my body was semi-paralyzed(TMS) for a week....so,being sensible I Hung it up.(TMS complete...Physicophobia)
NOW...I promised my kid that when he finished little league Baseball I'd teach him how to skate(I had too many thousands of Dollars in his pitching arm to jeopardize it sooner)So we've been out in the parking lot every day learning how to do the basics...jump a curb,slide,race,etc....of course I've had to re-learn it to teach it.
But,now that I'm TMS Saavy ,I of course have little fear of riding myself. So we've been riding...and riding....and riding.I even went to the Local skatepark and when I walked out, nobody even looked...lots of parents my age(and YOUNGER) are there to watch their kids skate...When I took off and dropped in off the top of a ramp,a lot of them raised an eyebrow "What's he DOING"...I'm not getting vertical(yet) like I was when I was 15,but I'm working on it.Riding little quarter pipes and doing forevers in the ditches. So..I turn 40 next month and I just bought myself the exact same deck I rode when I 'retired' at the ripe old age of 23-24.I also have a 'longboard' for racing and speed/downhill stuff.I get the queerest looks from other adults. If it wasn't for Sarno and knowing about TMS I would NEVER be able to muster the courage to even think about doing this, but IT'S FUN!!
The kids in the neighborhood and at the park are all really supportive...they think it's Great that an old Geezer is still at it!
Just another thing to be grateful to Sarno about.
