Hello--

I haven't been back to this site for about a year or so (when I had sciatica), but here I am again. I got a sinus infection in June and developed really bad sinus pain/pressure that hasn't cleared up, even tho the goopy stuff is gone. I have horrible nerve pain in my teeth and palatte, and pain in my sinuses--anti-inflamatories aren't doing anything. I also seem to be having trouble opening my jaw, which corresponded to my son accidentily elbowing me in the jaw, around the same time of the sinus infection. Interestingly enough, the infection and pain started at the same time my MIL sent me a really nasty letter. I have 2 competing urges going on in my head. One is that this is NOT TMS because it started with a "real" diagnosis (a sinus infection), which makes me terrified because then I feel I have no control over it. The second is that this is some TMS-like problem because of the joint pain in my jaw (although I don't understand the other symptoms) and because it correlated with being hit by my son (which pissed me off) and the nasty letter. I am trying to use all the good Sarno stuff as before, but it doesn't seem to be working this time. Any suggestions?

I had a horrible sinus infection that began last April 2003 with a flu. The sinus infection remained thru three courses of different antibiotics. Along with the horrible pressure, I had alot of dizziness, horrible fatigue, and an overall feeling of being very sick. I would start feeling better and it would always come back. I never had any drainage after about the first 2 weeks. Oddly enough, I had several friends that contracted the flu at the same time, including my boss in a different state, with the continuing sinus infection. The anti-inflamatories didn't help. One of my friends also had the jaw pain. I had never heard of Sarno. I had the major back attack in March. When I began using Dr. Sarnos methods to alleviate the pain, the sinus condition left with it. My friends still have symptoms and one also had a back attack. They all laugh at me when I try to explain my cure , but they are still sick. I am absolutely positive that the sinus problem was a tms equivalent. I had a bad day on Friday and Sat. morning I awoke with back stiffness and sinus trouble. Both were gone by noon. I am positive they are connected. I hope this helps you.

Cnaber - For what it's worth I've had similar jaw and mouth pain and it has also been correlated with terrible sinus conditions. Before I had this most recent bout with TMS beginning in March, I would have terrible sinus conditions, ever since I was in college some 10 years ago. Until now, I never really chalked it up as a TMS equivalent. Since my jaw and mouth started aching in March, I've noticed that when my mouth doesn't hurt, my sinuses come back. So Im 100% sure this is TMS. By the way, similar to your symptoms, the nerves in my pallette, gums and even cheeks really are really painful. A rheumatologist prescribed me with tegretol, which is a type of anti-seizure medication, to alleviate the pain and it has reduced the pain by about 50% with no side effects.

I've had crushing TMJ pain bouts for about 8 mos. in 94 and about a year and a half in 96. I had tooth and gum pain off and on for several years 200-2003. I had constant stuffed up nose last year for several months, and fullness in my ears for about 16 mos, up until recently. None of these things ever "checked out" as a definite medical condition but most of them came on the tail end of a legit initial problem, so there's no doubt TMS can prolong a legit problem months or years past its normal resolution. The fact that it started out legit doesnt mean it cant become TMS later on. I've gotten over all the stuff on that list by basically treating it as TMS. Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone for your replies. One question tho--I know with back issues Sarno recommends that you gradually re-introduce activity and stop avoiding things. Would that go for Sinus issues too? For example, when I bend over the sinus pressure is horrible. Should I just not avoid it and tell myself the pain is about anger and anxiety, etc., etc. It seems a little harder for me to apply the principles with a sinus issue than with sciatica, shoulder pain, etc.

Cnaber- I treat it exactly like back pain. You can't hurt yourself by laughing it off and going about your day. My tms is running a little mild course this week of all it's favorite symptoms and sinusitis was on the menu this morning. Its 8:30 here and it's almost gone already. Hope this helps.

I have probably some of the worst sinus problems on the planet. I have had three endoscopic sinus surgeries, which helped tremendously, and my sinuses are much better these days. (Dr. Josephson in NY is the best in the country). I still see my ENT once a month for a "clean up" procedure. When I went to see Dr. Sarno for my back pain, I asked him if I should stop going to the ENT, and use the TMS program for my sinus problems, as well as for my back. He said no, I shouldn't stop going to the ENT. He said that even though emotions play a role, I should still continue to treat my problem medically.

Also, Dr. Sarno believes that while you are working on pain syndromes with his program, you should take pain killers if necessary. I assume the same would apply to sinus problems. So, even if you want to use his program to address your sinus problems, I don't see why you shouldn't take a decongestant (or whatever helps) in the meantime to make you more comofortable.

Good luck.
