hi all-
today is ps12 (12 days post sarno visit). i have been following dr sarnos 'prescription' for my neck/shoulder pain as directed in his tms (tension myositis syndrome) diagnosis. doing the emotional work he prescribes is not easy, but i had a noticeable decline in pain on day 10. today is day 12 and the pain continues to abate. in fact, as elaine and i were discussing tms today, i realized that i was leaning against my left arm in the door jamb to her office and had NO PAIN.
dr sarno quoted another doc who said 'if the eyes do not weep the body will' and he said my body has been 'weeping' for many years.
since i was dismissed by my neurologist with the names of 4 neurosurgeons (after 4 epidural shots in my neck under xray on 2 separate occasions and taking 1200 mg/day of neurontin along with continuous muscle relaxants and narcotics for pain) and was in excrutiating pain 24/7 this is nothing short of amazing!
i will continue the psych work req'd until i am pain-free from this neck/shoulder pain. then i will go after the other long-term symptoms i have been seeing chiropractors for for years. probablt the asthma, too. i know some of you may benefit from the information. i have ordered 2 additional copies of sarnos book and have 1 in possesion already if anyone needs to borrow it.
an AMAZING and encouraging bit of info that my dad told me last week after i explained dr sarno's work: when he was running franklin medical in phila in the mid 70's the most referred doctor for people in pain was the psychotherapist. thes were very 'normal', functioning people. he told me that after about 6 visits (with 12 allowed by the hmo) most of them were pain-free! many of their symptoms were neurological, and this is an independent confirmation of sarnos work. i was actually concerned my dad would think this tms diagnosis a bit of bunk and was i ever surprised!
thanks dr s! no surgery for me!

Suz

good for you lee. That is awesome! I am very happy for you. By doing the psychological work - do you mean - journaling and reading the book?

suz-
reading, jouranaling and crying my eyes out several times a day. i have heard that anger is always a secondary emotion (to hurt, betrayal, etc) and the emotional pain, which is now coming out of my soul in tears instead of my shoulder/neck in pain, is surely just that. ive been thru a period like this once before in my life that lasted quite a while- i guess its time for another healing period. i used to say that not all healing feels good- for the last few years now i say that NO healing feels good.

Hi Lee,

Cool -- I'm so glad to hear success stories :) It gives me hope that if I keep on with this, I'll see results too.

I'd love to hear more about how to do the journaling -- I've been trying to do this for a while. Did you just start thinking about all your emotional issues from the past? In my case, most of the problems/conflicts in my life right now tie back to my pain -- people I've let down, career opportunities I've given up, etc. Do you just ignore all these issues and think about what WOULD be bugging you if you weren't in pain?

Thanks!

vikki-
i made a list of issues in the following categories (per sarno):
1.childhood 2.personality 3.life situations
i listed all issues i could think of and left room for others as i think of them. then i take each issue one by one and start writing about the situation and my feelings (and if i dont know what the feelings are i take a good, educated guess). thats about it. start w/ personality as that is the biggest anger contributor accd to sarno.
and as yoda said to luke: "no try-only do"
