I have gotten to the point where I am not fearful of hurting myself or injuring myself more since it is not physical anyway. I am however fearful of feeling the pain. I know by now the things that cause that intense burning sciatic pain and I dread doing them. I can do them a few times but then I just get tired of feeling that pain. For instance, I sit down, it hurts a few minutes. I get up, it hurts a few minutes. I get in and out of my vehicle, it hurts a few minutes. I can do these things a few times and just bear the pain. Then I find myself easing myself into that chair. Slowly easing myself up out of that chair. Getting into and out of my car a certain way as to not feel the pain as much. From what I have read in the books you are not to move this way. Are'nt you suppose to sit down,get up, get in & out of your car the way you always have and just bear the pain? One more biggie that has me puzzled. How can just acknowleging the emotion that cuases the pain make the pain go away? If that particular emotion such as in my case fear and worry about family and business is causing the TMS pain, even though I acknowlege it, that emotion is still there. It seems like you would have to GET RID of that tension causing the pain to GET RID of the pain. Not just acknowlege it. Am I way off base here. Don't hold back, please let me know.

The fear is harder to banish than the pain.

Your controlled movements when sitting down, getting in and out of your car ... it's all about conditioning. You are conditioned to feel pain when you do those things, so you do. It is important to break the cycle: force yourself to move more normally, despite the pain. Treat the pain with disdain. You have to keep at it in order to truly recondition yourself. Slowly you learn how to ignore the pain, and then slowly it starts to fade.

As for the emotion part, I'm not sure where you got the idea that "acknowledging the emotion that causes the pain make the pain go away." This is not true at all; in fact, we can not know the emotions that feed TMS because they are unconscious. We can only try to think about the conscious feelings that we are avoiding, that get repressed and transform into the inner rage.

You do not need to identify or banish the actual feelings that are the root of the TMS symptoms. You just have to accept that the pain is a smoke screen, manufactured by our brain to distract us from those repressed feelings. You do that by ignoring the pain and forcing yourself to confront certain feelings that you might be avoiding.
