Self Matters by Dr. Phil McGraw

a cognitive behavioural programme (couched in layperson's language) to unstick yourself from negative scripts other's have imposed on you. I really like his books because they are way more comprehensive than the flash you see on TV.

and a great book on regression by John Lee, who wrote about anger in Facing the Fire.

It's called Growing Yourself Back Up and has brilliant analysis on regression and it's role in conflict and anger.

It defines the difference between anger and regressive anger and how to respond to hurt or stress from an adult place rather than lashing out like a wounded child. The only thing I don't endorse from this guy is the whole primal scream thing. It's too kooky for me, but there are other techniques that are very useful for me to use. Plus it's fun and easy to read.

In my non maternity leave life my job is a child and family therapist so I get lots of opportunities to review books, theories, and put them into practise. I am always amazed by the amount of chronic illnesses my clients have that seem to be connected to childhood trauma.

I am so impressed by the amount of emotional work being done by the people on this board. The courage and perseverence of everyone is so inspiring to me, as is the support that people offer each other.

Just had to say that I keep meaning to buy Grow Yourself Back Up and, as someone who also thought that primal scream stuff was kooky, I have to say that it was THE KEY for me to getting 100% pain free. Before I started doing the Lee exercises, screaming and beating the couch behind closed doors, I had lingering pain/tension in my shoulders. Two years later now, I need to figure out a more adult and constructive way to deal with anger publicly...
