Hi all. Sorry for the cross post, but I know some of you are not in the PPD/TMS Forums and I was hoping to get advice/support from all corners.
Today after work I went to see my (regular) doctor. As per everyone's advice here, I went to see my doctor back in January to rule out anything physical. By that time I had been having severe foot pain which prevented me from walking for six months. She had me go for a bone scan and an EMG, both of which were clean. The neurologist told me my nerves were normal and healthy, and there were no small breaks in my bones.
So when I sat down for my follow-up exam today with Dr. Ro (I'll call her), I said to her, "Look, can I be honest? I've been having this thing looked at for six months. No one's found anything. I believe it's psychogenic, that my mind is causing this pain." She looked at me with astonishment. She said, "That's amazing. No one has ever said that to me before." She SEEMED supportive. At first. But then she said she thought it was something called Sympathetic Nerve Dystrophy, and she wanted me to see a specialist and also try a creme called capsaicin. However, she was also supportive when I said I wanted to see a doctor who specializes in treating psychogenic disorders, and she wrote me a referral for Dr. Rashbaum (I have an appt. to see him 3/25).
I have not even Googled Sympathetic Nerve Dystrophy--it sounds too scary, and I don't want to see the symptoms and have my brain start giving them to me! I feel like this is a major bump in the road for me, I have to get past it and continue treating the pain as TMS. But I'm feeling really really low right now. |

Shawn and Tom, thank you for your support. I'm looking forward to my meeting with Dr. Rashbaum. I'm hoping he can negate some of the nocebos in my head. |

Hi GailNYC,
Dr. Rashbaum is Dr. Sarno's hand-picked successor. If you call Dr. Sarno's old office number you will get a referral to Dr. Rashbaum. The good news is modern medicine is very good at dx'ing structural diseases and they could not find anything wrong with you. It sounds like the speculation that it may be "sympathetic nerve dystrophy" is the docs going on a fishing expedition. That's what they are trained to do practicing allopathic "modern" medicine, to search for physical causes of dis-ease and not for emotional ones--don't ask a barber if you need a hair-cut. I'm guessing your doc may be at NYU Hospital to have "seemed" supportive to your psychogenic ideas--maybe Dr. Sarno has left some legacy there. The capcasin is an over the counter cream whose active ingredient is pepper, it warms the skin, it may give you some symptomatic relief, probably wouldn't do you any harm.

You cry like a baby! Man, I remember I cried like a dog. I had to crawl to the bathroom, I had to walk with a walker, I had to use clutch, I had chronic attack, I had accute attack, I feel like chopping my foot off and be done with it at time. It was hell. And then it move to my back.

Yes, it was horrid. I cried like a baby. As I learned about TMS I walked with less fear even if the pain did not diminish. The heel pain is gone now. |

Sorry to hear of your difficult day. I suffered a lot from very severe foot pain for over 2 years. Don't google the term "Sympathetic Nerve Dystrophy" as what you will find will only freak you out, especially if you have an over active imagination. You are fortunate to have an appointment with Dr. Rashbaum, and hopefully he will confirm your suspicions that you have a case of TMS manifesting in the feet.
