I have been suffering from TMS for half of my life (am 35 now), although only known it is TMS for the last 6 years. The main symptoms I had were lower back spasms and pain, upper back and neck pain.
Since the first therapist I saw 6 years ago about TMS he pretty much sorted me out within 2 months as the relief alone of knowing it is TMS and not a back condition pretty much sorted me out(I had been told by many specialists that it was slipped discs causing the pain and my back was all over the place).
However I then suffered from anxiety within 6 months of my back pain clearing up and this went on for the last 5 years or so. I went back to the TMS specialist and he said it was the same thing moving around. However despite treatment from him I did not get better, however I could live with it through a positive attitude and it certainly was better than back pain as at least I could move around!

However after a lot of stress at work I suffered from a major back spasm 12 months ago, followed by further spasms every 1-4 weeks.
I then went to the main TMS therapist in the UK and despite going through the programme and following all practices on a daily basis, I have not recovered. In fact over time I would say my condition has got worse and worse, I am at the stage now when I can't stand for longer than 5 mins. It is very very disheartening, I feel I have dealt with all past issues and changed my attitude towards life, but I have just got worse and worse.
Would somebody please help as now doubts do begin to come in whether this really works?

Hi Balto and Dave,

Thank you for you advice. I know in the past I would have doubted it and would have at least 5% thought physical which only creates more pain and suffering due to fear, having done 100% physiological the fear element goes and hopefully in its own time this will get better.

I received the Mind Power book today so will get started on that tonight.

Many thanks, Pj

Your message already contains the best advice, and it is exactly what you have done:
quote:
I did ... keep my focus 100% on the physiological and did not question one bit whether it was physical. ... I relaxed as much as I could over the weekend and kept saying this is only temporary, as well looked at the negative stuff in my mind that has caused this.

Do this every time you are aware of the pain. Each time you strengthen the reconditioning of your mind. Over time the episodes will become less frequent and less severe when your unconscious mind reluctantly accepts that you no longer fear the pain.

Hi PJ, just keep doing what Ace1 advised you to do, keep doing it every day whenever you have time. And give it time to work, it could take days, weeks, or months, don't give up, you have to be persistent. You have to "believe", a %100 believe that it is tms and nothing else. Without %100 belief it not going to work. Mind power technique is going to help convince your mind that it is tms and it is nothing to fear. But you need to give it time, however long it take, time is very very important. Don't try to set deadline to heal, if you do it will not work because once you got frustrated you will have to start all over again.

Also, don't look for the negative stuff in your mind. It will not help and may even make it worst. Look for the positives, count your blessings, believe that you are healthy and this is just tms.

Hope this help.

Hi Ace1,

Thank you for your advice I am putting it in practice.

I had some stress on Friday evening which tightened up my lower back and did not ease off. Saturday morning my back went into spasm, it was very very disheartening as I could not stand up without severe pain. The first 48 hours were the worse, I have started to move a little now.
I did however after a long time keep my focus 100% on the physiological and did not question one bit whether it was physical. I do feel over time I have stuffed my mind that this is all physiological and to do with negative thoughts and emotions only.
I relaxed as much as I could over the weekend and kept saying this is only temporary, as well looked at the negative stuff in my mind that has caused this.
What would be the best advice please when suffering a major spasm, should one just rest it out and do anything that makes one feel better?

One more thing pj, you have to accept your symptoms and don't fight them in anyway when using the affirmations. In other words don't use the affirmations as a battle to your symptoms but more as a tool for change to help your symptoms not happen as often. You will see that when you accept your symptoms that is sometimes the best relaxation you can undertake when in pain. Kind of like I'm in pain ok I see it bc I'm in this situation, well I accept it then think about it and be ok with it instead of trying to do everything possible to stop it or pull away from it, then use the affirmations I gave you in a repeated manner
PJ77 Posted - 09/07/2012 : 03:13:15
Thanks Ace1,

I will use them regularly, thank you.
Ace1 Posted - 09/06/2012 : 15:07:18
I'm calm relaxed patient and confident
I forgive and let go easily

Use them as needed through the day which may be all day and before sleep and after sleep for 5 min each

Hi Ace1,

You say to check out the affirmations you used in your success story but I cannot seem to find the affirmations, please could you let me know which ones they were, thank you.
Ace1 Posted - 09/05/2012 : 13:06:53
Also dont think so much anger as more so of a revved up mind. As you do this you will see things that annoyed or angered you more clearly and you will try to prevent this reaction
Ace1 Posted - 09/05/2012 : 13:05:14
You will see in the book mindpower, that you dont have to believe the affirmation, just say them. Maybe your putting too much force into using them. Just repeat them like broken records (in the background of what your doing) and try to relax into them

Hi Aussie

Thank you for your advice, there is 1 therapist in the Uk who I can get to who I did see, I do feel it is not the same over skype even though it is better than nothing. I have never been a fan of painkillers as it just numbs the problem and I carry on behaving (mentally) like I normally do creating further stress which only increases the pain once they've worn off. I have ordered the book Mind Power and will work on the techniques to move forward.

Ace1 I have read your recovery post and am pleased you got there in the end. I believe I do have a negative habit in the way I think due to my perfectionism. Breaking this habit may well be the key to moving forward but it is proving to be very very difficult. When I fall back into this habit eventually after trying to keep positive and using positive affirmations, my symptoms start and get much worse and before I know it I cannot move and am stuck sat down somewhere. Its as if my body is saying "Stop thinking or I will make you stop thinking". This then leads to further frustration as I cannot break the habit. There is no leeway, if I think a bit negative (even without knowing it is negative) it feels like I am being punished. I cannot take any stress either or is this a conditioned response?

You are right this will be a long haul. I have read this is due to rage but what rage is it, I do not know what I am angry about inside? As said before I feel past issues have been dealt with but daily minor stresses and thoughts are keeping this fully alive.
Ace1 Posted - 09/05/2012 : 11:18:07
One more thing, when you use your body use it lightly, relaxed, without force, intensity or strain. It takes a while to learn this but it is very important. Gradually, do more and more as your body allows gently.
Ace1 Posted - 09/05/2012 : 08:14:13
Whats funny about all this is that I dont think I would have recovered any faster had I been in intense psychotherapy. Please read my success story and look at the affirmations I used. You have to use them like I stated. I actually was doing them almost all day even when I didn't feel like doing it. It does work but you have to do it to that degree. Also are you in anyway fighting the symptoms?, which is a major error. They are just messengers, they will never go away or they will come in different forms until the problem is fixed, remember this. It is quite ok to take it easy on yourself whhen in pain and that is not backing down. It is better to think of it this way. Negative thoughts result in a mental strain, the mental strain leads to a physical strain. How do you relieve strain? Do you strain more and try to fight more? of course not. You relief strain, by relaxation. Is relaxation lying in bed all day? No, you need to relax doing normal things and living your life normally (without straining). How do you accomplish this since it is so ingrained in your mind not to. THrough mind power techniques, while going through the motions of daily life and trying not to strain. This means also monitoring your reactions all day. Does this type of treatment work quick, believe it or not in some people yes as their minds are very suseptiable to suggestion, but most people in your condition will take a long time and thats ok, it took a long time for you get this way. Good luck

I cant add too much except that there are many stories from previous posters here that show it can take a long time to recover from TMS. One person that i followed who was actually treated by Sarno took over a year to recover and that was with a TMS Psychotherapist.

It's tough when you dont live near one but neither do millions of other sufferers. If you look hard enough you will find one that can treat you via skype. Other than that some strong painkillers may help you with the level of pain you have now which sounds completely unmanageable compared to most.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Ace1 and balto, thank you for letting me know, I will order the book.
Catmac I am very pleased EFT helped you, I have had approx 8 sessions and have found it helps if only a little for, I have seen around a 10% improvement with it. I am carrying on with it and hopefully will get there one day!

I will say I am finding the symptoms very very hard to deal with. I have tried a lot of techniques to deal with my emotions and live around my symptoms, I have changed my attitude towards the pain and tried every bit of advice I have been given by a lot of helpful members on this site as well as reading and re-reading several TMS books and completing a full course with the main TMS specialist in the UK.
However I am sorry to say that despite all these efforts over a period of over 14 months I am no better at all. I feel I have dealt with past issues but on a daily basis maybe with my thoughts I am creating stress and hence pain. I am just unsure what else to do as I cannot work anymore, I cannot travel or move around, getting dressed takes anything from 1-5 hours every morning, and despite being advised in the past to view this pain as a signal that you are not happy in your life, well if I wasn't happy before I am suicidal now!

Any bit of support will be very welcomed please.

Hi tennis tom,

Iam due to see an EFT therapist this week but not sure whether that will help or not.
I did see Georgie Oldfield for 6-8 sessions but stopped as my symptoms were pretty much on average the same under her. I am debating whether to go back even though to her but its not been long since i was there. I will keep on reading the material but it seems any sort of stress/non positive thought triggers it as well as bending, lifting and sitting on a chair.

Hi,

I'm also in the uk (Scotland) and couldnt find any TMS therapists here but I did try EFT and found it excellent. I only went for two sessions and felt so much better afterwards although when I was there I was thinking 'I cant see this making any difference' but it did. I have no idea how it works but it certainly worked for me. There are also a few good threads on eft on this forum if you use the search at the top of the page.

Hope it helps you, take care

Yes, negative thoughts create negative emotions which if allow to go on for a long time will create tms/anxiety symptoms.

The book Ace1 recommended is: "Mind Power into the 21st Century: Techniques to Harness the Astounding Powers of Thought - John Kehoe."

You can check out Kehoe's informative site: www.kehoe-mindpower.com. As long as you practice his techniques regularly and keep focus on your goals, you will get rid of tms/anxiety symptoms.

Hi Ace1, many thanks for your post. The book Mind Power, is that the one by James Borg?

I think I needed a little assuring that negative thoughts and negative thoughts alone are enough on their own to have this debilitating back pain. So how does one deal with these thoughts or will that be in the book above?
Ace1 Posted - 09/03/2012 : 09:16:59
Yes negative thoughts are enough to perpetuate symptoms and are the basic cause. If you were never this way you would have never developed tms. Get the book mind power to understand. A way to look at it is your mind wants to make you happy. You start to say you don't like this and that. You mind sees your unhappy so it causes pain so you don't recognize how unhappy your are. Good luck
