Re the "down there" pain, Abigail Stedley has a good TMS website with much focus on this particular issue, as she had it. Link through TMS Wiki I think.

As far as the emotional issues go, as Tennis Tom suggested, I would list

self-pity
feelings of abandonment
rage
more rage
more rage than I know
tragic loneliness
pissed off at family
anxious about things

... for starters

and as for symptoms, I just got a new one - chest pains - today. A feeling in my ribcage and lungs that it hurts to breathe, along with dizziness and tiredness and a feeling behind my face that just wants to cry because
sad

and you?

golden_girl, You got it, I'm a Beatles fan! And I'm a Paul McCartney fan in particular. I have loved their music from the beginning. Paul and his first wife, Linda also really impresed me when they stood up for Animal Welfare. The Beatles music has gotten me through a lot in my life and made it a lot more fun too.

My vulvodynia (actually) stopped after I had gone to a proctologist for my lavator ani syndrome. He told me that my suffering was due to a lavator muscle spasm. He said it's not known what causes this muscle to spasm and there's not much that can be done for it. When he said all this the light bulb went on over my head! This diagnosis had TMS written all over it!

Within several weeks I was getting control of this condition and after several months I was mostly back to normal. Now it's gone. But what really surprised me is that the vulvodynia stopped too and so did the teeth pain and gum problems! I wasn't expecting this to happen at all. It had all been TMS!

I had suffered with vulvodynia for around 5 years. I was furious that I had not believed that it was TMS. With all these conditions going at the same time I was in a living hell.

I was also diagnosed with probable interstitial cystitis at the time of the vulvodynia. I learned that it's a hard diagnosis to make if acutual ulcers in the lining of the bladder can't be found. Some doctors say it isn't even real. Dr. Sarno lists it as an equivelant.

I also find it interesting how many men in this group talk about genital pain. I thought it was mostly a female issue.

GoldenGirl, you wouldn't happen to live near Liverpool, would ye?

Maccafan (Beatles?!) - can I ask (probably not actually!!) how your vulvodynia eased? It's such a strange issue, many men on here discuss prostate issues, but for women it seems a little more... Difficult?

For what it's worth, I've had anxiety since I was a child, IBS, paranoia, OCD, hypochondria, and various aches and pains. I have none of that, except anxiety, anymore. I now have had anxiety and what is most easily described as 'interstitial cystitis' for 7 years.

My emotional issues centre around self esteem, fear of ridicule, immaturity and lack of responsibility and fear of life/death.

How lovely :(

Physical TMS distractions: Chronic epididymitis, low back pain, TMJ, L/R shoulder pain, L/R achilles tendon pain, tinnitus. All tests negative save for the ubiquitous "degenerative disc disease" which I know now to be a non-issue.

Emotional issues: Fear of physical pain when exercising, fear of indecisiveness on career path, highly self-critical (perfectionism), overly conscientious (people-pleasing), become easily irritated when others aren't courteous or polite... there are others, but those are the major issues.

Just wanted to add my 3 cents worth.

My TMS symptoms started out individually such as knee (both of 'em) pain and then back pain. Then after I educatied myself with Dr. Sarno's books and stopped the knee pain and gained almost total control of my back pain (barely a disc between L4 and L5) other symptoms begain to occur in combo.

These are vulvodynia, levator ani syndrome, gum problems, teeth pain, IBS, dry eyes, eye flashes and floaters and severe tinnitus.

I stopped All of these except for the eye problems and very severe tinnitus.

The strangest symptom that I've experienced in combo with the previous mentioned are very sharp painful shooting pains. The pains will occur just on the skin of my scalp or the skin on the side of my face or on my arm or in my ear. It's like a very strong, large rubber band with thorns in it popping these areas. These pains can be on going or just a single zap that makes me jump.

I wanted to continue this thread because there are people out there that are just starting their educational journey with the TMS info wondering about their combination of symptoms. It was very interesting to me to read about so many people experiencing eye floaters, etc. for instance.

Lets add itchy eyes and other "itching" to the combination and blurriness

Tennis Tom...I agree let's not focus on our issues and think about the emotional aspect.

Mine would be worrying about "everything". Taking things too personally. Trying to be perfect. Putting others above myself. Letting my mother make me feel guilty, and not being able to express my anger. Fear of failure and what others think of me.

Gosh...if I could get past those I would be "perfect".

This being the TMS Forum, it would be much more beneficial naming the emotional issues those symptoms are distracting you from. For some examples look at the Rahe-Holmes list.

Hey, this is interesting. It's probably healthier to name one's symptoms than to Google them!

I'd like to just name the symptoms that are trying to distract me right now! An aching burning tension sensation that never stays still but constantly moves from one place to another, moment to moment, all over my body, distracting me not only with pain but with motion of pain! And, pain in my left hip every time I stand up and start moving, sometimes almost can't put weight on it.

Bilateral foot, ankle and leg pain, plantar fascitis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, acid relux, upper body muscle tightness, anxiety, OCD - have had "serious" stuff like MS, lyme disease, etc. ruled out by over 15 specialists. Gonna make appt. with Dr. Sarno soon but was hoping to see Dr. Sopher in NH - anyone know what happened to his practice? His recording said it closed.

Most recently: heartburn/indigestion/IBS, joint pain in hips, knees and right thumb, dizziness, low energy/fatigue. I seem to have gotten a handle on the back pain but some of these others are hard to lick. Stomach problems seem to be the hardest to overcome. Of course I said that about dizziness last year

Here goes: back pain, hip pain, leg pain, plantar fascitis, neck pain, arm pain, sciatica, headaches, vertigo, tinnitus, prostatitis, knee pain, shoulder pain, hand pain, and a few others I have forgotten to mention -- all within the last year.

Good point on tinnitus, Art.

I was on vacation in AZ last week and it was interesting to see my normal hypochondria at a much lower level. Not zero, of course, but at a surprisingly manageable level. I even went for a 14 mile run on the canals one day, which is more than I have done since a hip injury 6 months ago. Interestingly, when I arrived home, it was not an hour before I was barraged my the usual string of symptoms, incl tinnitus, which seemed to have risen a few decibels. Fortunately, that was only for a day or two.

It is becoming more clear to me all the time how I can't assume anything when it comes to physical symptoms. Every one must be looked at from the perspective of tms no matter how "real" it seems.

Thats exactly what has happen to me Art.On vacation this week and felt pretty good until my spare time got the better of me and I started noticing a hiss in my right ear(but actually in my head). Now of course I cant get rid of it.

I think tinnitis is often a matter of selective attention, like the eye floaters discussed in the pther thread.

I have tinnitus when I pay attention to it. I don't when I don't..
I wonder how many other symptoms follow this model.
wrldtrv Posted - 04/13/2011 : 19:36:05
Surprising how many have tinnitus. Seems to be the common cold of TMS.

Currently (depending on the day or time of day) tinnitus, pf (left and right), hamstring tendonitis occasionally, groin sensitivity, elbow pain, chronic worry, dysthymia, and most troublesome of all: hypochondria.
scman Posted - 04/13/2011 : 17:13:12
I guess hypochondria would be a symptom too lol
sickagain Posted - 04/13/2011 : 16:36:01
Ok...here we go: IBS, GERD, tennis elbow, migraine, floaters, some flashers, dry eye, rosacea, lightheaded (last year...went away with journaling), plus some other symptoms in the past.
