Posted - 07/22/2007 : 19:32:47 Did you know there are 7 common crutches that can keep you in pain despite all their journaling and mental work? Read about them in "Pain Free For Life" by Dr. Scott Brady. I estimate that everyone on this message board leaning on at least one of these crutches.

Yes, Shawn, it is kind of weird how you post these little "teasers" and then don't share the information. It's patronizing, and appears to be an attention getting device on your part.

Posted - 07/24/2007 : 15:38:19 How do I feel? Amused.
Anyone who tries Byron Katie on me isn't going to get much of anywhere. I find it utterly unhelpful and also a rather cowardly way of avoiding a conflict.

Shawn, if I didn't know better I'd suspect you of shilling for Brady with your reluctance to share this stuff. It's a bit silly to bring this up and refuse to provide any further information.

Is true? Is it really true? How do you feel when you think that thought?
For those who give up on Brady's because of religious overtones he clearly states in his book that one need not be religious or spiritual at all to benefit from his book. I agree with that statement.

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 19:53:02 My neighbour gave up on the book because of the religious ovetones. The 7 crutches are: 1-Body medicine crutch 2- lack of confidence crutch 3- medication crutch 4- fear crutch 5- mental diversions crutch 6-emotional blindness crutch 7-untreated depression crutch I am going to re-read this book, it's been a year or so. Dr. Brady has interesting insights, I believe they compliment Dr. Sarno's work. |

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 19:26:45 I enjoyed this book - I don't remember about the crutches. I have lent it to my neighbour, she is training for a triathalon, and having tms symptoms. I'll get it back to look those up, and post again. |

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 15:46:02 can't you just share one of the crutches that you use, since you thought that everyone here has one? |

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 15:06:37 Yes, it would kill me and I don't have time to summarize the whole chapter. I hope you don't want that for me. The stingy one is the one who won't buy the book:)

It is better to buy the book as it provides more details. Honest, it is worth the investment.

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 06:10:46 I agree with stanfr, the Christian / spirituality element did not interfere with his book in the least, and I am not a Christian myself nor ever plan to be one either. He makes it clear that if you are not a spiritual person at all you can still benefit from his book. A lot more practical steps are offered which complement Sarno- his medical mentor.

Posted - 07/23/2007 : 03:06:23 Sky; yes he makes it clear he feels a spiritual component is important, and one can infer from some of the passages that there is a Christian 'bent' to it, but he makes it very clear that these personal views are not necessary for recovery, and i personally did not feel this aspect of the book 'got in the way' of any of the other advice. In other words, if you share his faith it will only make you like the book more, if you don't i don't think it detracts anything. |
