I too have multiple symptoms, especially neck shoulder and tinnitus. Has anyone applied Dr. Sarno's theory with ringing in the ears and it has gotten better?

I have had tinnitus forI guess 30 years. I could either stop and
say "oh **** my ears are rinning again " for the 3000th time or ignore
it. I guess it was my early body talking back with tension. I also had a very charming eye twitch which switched eyes as I pulled into the parking lot on day ONE of a new job. It was not until finding Sarno and getting so f-----ing sick of my legs hurting that all this came into focus. Having been on Prozac since it was a puppy I went off thinking it may be the problem. With a new shrink he put me on Cymbalta and one week later my tight legs relaxed. Placebo no idea but they are still relaxed. I then after reading Sarno stuff over and over I decided to ignore my legs. I took the massager out of my car chair office bed hand held etc. I stopped stretching .All this acctivity was focusing my mind on the pain as I tried to relieve it.
This has worked. When I do hurt I simply sit and have my mind relax my body. Deep breathing also helps. I then get up and if it still
hurts thats too bad and I ignore it. It works and almost all of the time I am fine. Now and then it flares up and I do the same routine.
I recently told my shrink "I had a flare up of this or that"
His response was to avoid flare ups you would have to be in a coma
Good Luck

Becca - it took about 3 weeks to get "rid" of the tinnitus after having it for about 3 years after attending a fireworks display. It still comes back if I think about it - like right now (of course). When it comes back, I just laugh it off and tell myself that there is no structural problem, and I turn the music up louder on my car radio or TV to tell myself that I am not going to take this silly BS and I can't hurt myself with loud sounds...As to the nature of those 3 weeks of "treatment", I had ups and downs but it was progressively up...I have to admit that the TRT therapist metioned some structural factors in my case - life long exposure to loud noises (concerts/nightclubs) - but said that it didn't matter - I could still get rid of the tinnitus by behavioral changes. I was surprised that she mentioned the physical because the web site says nothing about structural factors. So I chose to discount this portion of what the audiologist said and to believe in the tinnitus web site (that's the problem is all psychological/perceptual) and Sarno. It did help going to the TRT therapist to get practical advise as to environmental changes (noise conditioning - including sleeping with a noise machine on - which I no longer need to do)...I do have a moderate hearing loss in the affected ear, but not deafness.

Thanks for writing. How did you learn to ignore it????

Hey P: I don't know why you can't e-mail me. I'll have to ask someone who knows about computers. How are you feeling today? Neck better? Ringing better? I hope so!

I read that you had good success treating your tinnitus with a TRT therapist. How long was your recovery process? What kinds of ups and downs did you have as you applied sarnos theories and the TRT therapy?
I recently suffered sudden deafness in one ear as a result of a viral infection. I now have constant tinniuts. I am hoping that I can do something about it. The TRT therapists seem to think that tinnitus is irrelevant to ones hearing status? I that what you were told?-R

JOela,

Hi Joan.

My tinnitus is increasing some days when I clench teeth. I also have TMJ. I
was in the process of treating it with a neuromuscular dentistry approach
when I discovered sarno. In my case its definitely tension related. My neck
has been sore for years but I had a very mild whiplash while playing hockey
8 months ago and it triggered nothing less than nasty TMS hell in my
neck... TInnitus appeared suddenly, followed by very aggressive upper neck
spasms on the left .. some drugs helped relieve the spasms like ativan. MRI
, CAT SCAN and ultrasound were all normal...

I stopped chiro, PT, osteo, accupuncture and massage 3 months ago to focus
on sarno... TMS approach is helping me. I feel very small improvements each
weeks... I have some days pain free, it is very variable at that time ....

my neck symtoms include crackling, rice crispies sounds, muscle spasms at
the base of the skull (sub occipital muscles). varying difficulties to
rotate my neck to the left or to do left lateral neck flexion ... tinnitus
, TMJ crackling. etc etc...

By the way. I am a Ph.D. in medical enginerring, so just like you I tend to
overanalyze too much myself ...

I could be kinda cool to keep track of our mutual progess i think !

P.

I cannot email you using this site.. Send me your email directly si I can write to you directly

thanx

the fact that it increases when you yawns suggest that its probably relatted to muscle tension .... so probably to TMS... I hope it is a little bit reassuring... If it was related to auditory nerve damage solely, it would probably not be dependant on your muscular activity.

by the way, joela, you can reach me to pdube@kineconcept.com
if you would like to talk about it.

joela, mine is also at the base of the skull by the way .. its probably involving the trigeminal nerve which is innervating the ear if I remember well. it could explain de tinnitus.

do you see any link between your neck pain and the intensity of your tinnitus ??.. does it increase when you clench your teeth for instance ?

The opinions found on the web site are mostly compatible with Sarno's principles.

Hi Peter: Thanks for asking. I had been going thru a difficult time in my life with trying to obtain a life long dream in my profession. It took three long years of ups and downs but I did get it! I went thru a lot of stress and I know that is most of what has caused these aches and pains and ringing. I am just trying to figure out how to apply it.

I had tinnitus several years ago. In my case it was purely psychological. It went away for good after about a year. From time to time it reappears briefly when I am stressed.
